SOS Meals on Wheels SOS Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nutritious meals to homebound seniors in Castro Valley, Hayward, Oakland, San Leandro and San Lorenzo.

When #Subaru_usa gifted us a new #MealsonWheels branded Outback in 2018, we knew our "Souparu" was going to get a lot of nutritious meals into the hands of seniors in need of them. But that's not the only way this eye-catching vehicle has helped #strengthencommunity. #STL #visibilitymatters #checkinonyourneighbors

SOSMOW has been spreading extra joy and good cheer by delivering donations of handmade gifts and care packages along with our meals this holiday season. Thank you to Meals on Wheels of Alameda County for preparing 1,900 care packages; the students at St. Felicitas Catholic School for crafting a charming array of Thanksgiving cards and placemats for our senior clients in San Leandro; and to Comfy Cozy Community Quilters for quilts and crocheted blankets to warm the laps of seniors this winter. Extra special thanks to Share the Spirit East Bay, a project of the Bay Area News Group – East Bay Times, and Fremont Bank Foundation, for awarding us grants to offset the costs of serving meals during the holidays. And to all the volunteers, we could not do it without you! #STSEastBay, #STSEastBay2020, #SOSMOW

Warm thanks to Rotary Club of San Leandro President Amy Neuman, who stopped by SOS Meals on Wheels today to present Executive Director Charlie Deterline with a $500 donation. The Rotary Club of San Leandro' most recent fundraiser (The Shrimp Boil) that was held in October was dedicated to raising funds and giving back to the community for COVID relief. SOS is grateful to be a beneficiary of their efforts as the value of this donation cannot be overstated. Thank you, Rotary Club of San Leandro, on behalf of SOSMOW and the community we serve! #ServiceAboveSelf #KeepSayingYes2SOS

On Saturday, Team SOS paid a little visit to our local Subaru Dealership on Oakland's Auto Row. We thanked them (with sweet treats!) for participating once again in the #SharetheLove Event and supporting our work with homebound seniors.

We love these moments when we get to put faces to names (that's Amy Sedan from SOS and Richard Polk from Subaru!), and connect personally with people and businesses in the community who are doing good work. It's through connection and shared purpose that we can all find hope and joy, even in trying times.

Have you connected with your people and your purpose today? #Subaru_usa #MealsonWheels

Exciting news! SOS Meals on Wheels just received a generous grant for $75,675 from Safeway and their #NourishingNeighbors Community Relief Initiative.

We will use this grant to purchase a new Blast Chiller, a piece of equipment that will enable us to bring hot food down to safe storage temperatures, so we can more quickly begin the meal packing process, while maintaining the highest quality control and assurance.

A huge THANK YOU to Safeway for making bold moves to help meet the needs of homebound seniors and other marginalized communities!

Amid all the hustle and bustle of our end-of-the-year activities at SOS Meal on Wheels, we happily make time for #Subaru_usa and their #SharetheLove Event because of this fact: Over the last 12 years, Subaru and its retailers have helped the #MealsonWheels network deliver more than 2.3 MILLION MEALS to seniors in need across the country. You can help that number grow when you buy or lease a new Subaru between November 19, 2020 and January 4, 2021. Not in the market for a car? Tell your friends who are to select Meals on Wheels as their charity of choice. Do it for the seniors!

For those of you who are new to SOS Meals on Wheels, welcome! This lovely car is Souparu. Souparu came to us a few years ago thanks to the partnership between Meals on Wheels and Subaru, and it has delivered thousands of meals to vulnerable seniors in Alameda County since then. Isn't that awesome?

Well, that partnership is still going strong. Find out how: www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/sharethelove

And if you are in the market for a new vehicle, consider a Subaru and you can help feed seniors in your area too! #ShareTheLove #Subaru_usa #MealsonWheels

Our volunteers have the power in their hands to pack and deliver meals. You have the power to donate from home. Help us to deliver more meals by donating tomorrow April 21, #GivefromHomeDay! The need to fight food insecurity for our older loved ones has never been greater and SOS Meals on Wheels is meeting the challenge! Our kitchen has produced as many as 3,100 meals in one day; we’ve added an average of 87 new clients every week, since the shelter in place began; and more than 200 new volunteers have joined since March 16. This #GivefromHomeDay, help us recognize our incredible volunteers, spread hope throughout our community, and feed our older neighbors every day. Go to www.SOSMOW.org/donate

Thousands of Emergency Meals for Alameda County's Most Vulnerable

Want to know what 13,520 shelf-stable meals looks like? Watch this! As part of our response to the explosion of requests for meals since the arrival of COVID-19, SOS Meals on Wheels has purchased thousands of emergency meals. Many of these will go out to Alameda County seniors who are most at-risk of hunger and malnutrition. And who is that behind the wheel of the forklift? Why, that's our very own (gloved) hands-on Executive Director Charlie Deterline.

Relief Fund Launched For Vulnerable Residents, First Responders

"Bay Area-based Hellman Foundation has contributed an initial $1 million to help meet the needs of at-risk senior residents in Oakland."

Great news for the seniors we serve and the seniors we hope to be serving soon!

Speaking at a news conference outside the Veterans' Building Senior Center, Schaaf said the Oa...

Today was a lot. For all of us, especially so here in the Bay Area. There's so much to process, so much to plan for.
At SOS Meals on Wheels, over 55% of our meal delivery drivers (paid and volunteers) are 65 or older, and were not able to come in today - almost every single one tried, but we had to send them home.

We put out the call for help, and our community has and continues to respond - over 100 people reached out just today, to see if they could help deliver meals (the answer is yes!).
We will continue to need more help - SOS Meals on Wheels, as an "essential service" will remain open and continue to serve homebound seniors throughout Oakland, and much of Central Alameda County.

The reason we know we'll continue to need more is that while we had such a wonderful amount of support and offers of help, we've had an exponentially greater number of requests for service. We're already serving over 1,400 seniors every day; we expect that to be around 2,000 within a week. The first week.

With your help, we can avoid the "What Are We Going to Do?" mindset, and stay in the "What CAN We Do, Together?" mindset.
