Thank you to Kim and everyone from Lionakis for you support of SOS Meals on Wheels!

SOS Meals on Wheels is one of the charitable organizations that the Lionakis Foundation was gladly able to support this year. Senior Project Coordinator, Kim Conner, nominated this organization that provides much needed meals to Seniors throughout Alameda County including Castro Valley, Hayward, Oakland, San Leandro and San Lorenzo, CA.

Recently, a big thank you announcement came out to all their many volunteers, like Kim, who help to prepare and deliver more than 10,000 meals per week!

Thank you to Kim and to SOSMOW for all you're doing! If you wish to help, a donation of as little as $9.00 helps to pay for one, nutritious meal that always includes fresh produce. You can also sign-up to volunteer your time, or become a corporate sponsor.

A half-million meals served!!

This week, SOS Meals on Wheels will commemorate this historic milestone by inviting some very special guests to join us on our delivery routes. Mayor Libby Schaaf, Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter and Mayor Barbara Halliday, Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, and Supervisor Wilam Chan, to name a few.

We're so thankful to our community of drivers, donors, volunteers, kitchen and office staff for ensuring that our older neighbors stay nourished and connected.

March for Meals 2021 at SOS MOW was a HUGE success!!

On March 22, 1972, President Nixon signed a measure into law that established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. To celebrate this important piece of legislature, every March we invite city and state elected officials as well as important community figures to join our drivers on their daily delivery routes.

Thank you to the following leaders that went out into their communities to show our seniors a little bit of extra love:

Kevin Jenkins and Linda Handy, Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees
Bryan Azevedo, San Leandro City Councilmember
Oakland City Councilmember Treva Reid, District 7
Loren Taylor for Oakland City Council
Oakland City Councilmember Sheng Thao, District 4
Barbara Halliday, Mayor of Hayward
Mark Williams, AC Transit Director
Phong La, Alameda County Assessor
Josh Fryday , Chief Service Officer of California
Nikki Bas, Oakland City Council President

These are just a small selection of photos from the deliveries that were made; we hope they bring a smile to your face as much as it did to the seniors receiving the meals.

At the beginning of every month SOS Meals on Wheels clients receive a calendar listing the what's on the menu for each day of that month. On the back of this calendar we feature a selection of meal tips and nutrition information.

Well this month's theme is fiber! Did you know a diet rich in fiber is associated with with many health benefits, including better blood sugar level regulation and a reduced risk of heart disease?

All of our meals contain a healthy helping of fiber. Can you spot the fiber in today's meal?

Today's #BlackHistoryMonth reading recommendation comes from Cynthia Arrington. The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by #PulitzerPrize winning author Isabel Wilkerson.

Wilkerson interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of the decades-long migration of almost six million black citizens (including many SOS Meals on Wheels clients!) who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life.

Pick up the book here: http://ow.ly/RvQL50DKbIX and find out how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Today, we add a musical contribution to our running list of SOS Staff-recommended essential books, works of art and local businesses created by or about Black Americans.

The Complete Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong on Verve is one of Amy Sedan's favorite jazz compilations. Here's what she loves about this fascinating duo: "Ella is an amazing lyrical singer, but is also know for her ability to use scat to imitate the sound of a other jazz instruments like saxophone or trombone, while Louis is a phenomenal trumpet player but also has such a distinctive raspy voice that is perfect for crooning."

Ella performed until she was 76, Louis performed basically up until he died, age 69.

Today's #BlackHistoryMonth reading recommendation comes from Tara Marino--Our Time is Now: Power, Purpose and the Fight for a Fair America by Stacey Abrams Here is what Tara had to say about it:

"While the book’s contents are discouraging and enraging, Abrams manages to fill you with hope and a heavy sense of pride for what people have been able to overcome and fight despite the many roadblocks placed before them. Ultimately, the power of the people will prevail."

We see partnership potential here. How about you, Tanya Holland?

Our seniors really felt the love this weekend, thanks to San Leandro Boy Scout Troop 503, who generously donated over 200 handmade Valentine's Day cards to our office. ❤️

With the help of volunteers like Mike Jackson (pictured here), these cards were delivered on Friday, along with a meal and a smile. Thank you, Troop 503, for helping us show our seniors how much their community cares for them - a little recognition can really brighten up a person's day.

Marilyn Englander: Volunteering - KQED

"Yes, I have to get up early, and wear a tight mask and sweaty gloves for hours. It’s often too hot or too cold at the deserted school where a drive-up pantry was established early in the pandemic. All morning, a dozen of us fill bags with dusty potatoes and wet broccoli, or tote heavy boxes of frozen meat to people’s cars. After my shift I’m tired. But that’s just the factual outline of the work. Someone always brings a boombox and we sing along as we sort bread donations or stack eggs. Due to masking, I wouldn’t recognize the lower half of people’s faces, but I think of them as friends...I’ve gotten to know all kinds of people...everyone united in celebrating how many families we are feeding each week. The hours fly by. Another volunteer said it all, 'My week feels flat without this day,' and I agree. We never have a bad day at the food bank!"

SOS volunteers often tell us the same thing--the few hours they spend helping to feed homebound seniors is the best part of their week! And yes, sometimes the weather is terrible, parking is hard to find, the call-box is uncooperative--and yet the enormous rewards #volunteering brings make it all worth it.

Are you ready to start your volunteering journey? https://www.sosmow.org/volunteer

Is a smile worth more than a paycheck? Marilyn Englander looks at being a volunteer.

Our awesome Program Director Tara Marino brings us today's #BlackOwnedBusiness recommendation--San Leandro's own Rob Skate Skateboard Academy. Here's what she has to say about it:

"Rob and his staff have been assisting our boys with their zoom meetings and class work along with teaching them to become skilled and confident skateboarders. Rob offers an alternative to home school during the pandemic along with private lessons at his indoor COVID safe skateboarding school. Rob and his incredible staff have been a lifesaver and I wouldn’t have been able to continue working throughout COVID without them!"
