Culinary Arts Program
Food Saves Lives

Restorative Partners is partnering with Cuesta College to implement a 16-week, fast-track culinary training program where students earn a Culinary Arts Foundation Certificate of Specialization. Future cohorts will have lab portions facilitated onsite at Restorative Partners' upcoming social enterprise café, The Bridge Café. We will host three cohorts of trainees, totaling 12 participants each year. The courses include online lectures and hands-on lab and work experience, both hosted at The Bridge Café.

The Culinary Certificate of Specialization provides job skills in a career technical educational program. It is designed to integrate academic and lab training with real-life experience in the field of Culinary Arts. Selected courses within the curriculum meet requirements for entry-level employment, ServSafe certification, and transferability to CSU programs. The program also provides students with lifelong learning knowledge and consumer and industry-applicable skills. Students are provided support through our System Navigators and Case Managers.

Our interest in providing culinary training work development kicked off in 2019 with the Culinary Training & Internship Program (CTIP) launched in partnership with the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo County and Cuesta College. Students participated in 7.5 units of culinary courses, life skills and restorative justice groups, case management services, and job placement assistance.

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in the Confederate States were declared legally free.

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

Come and engage with Gary L Joralemon, author of "The Stadium Steps." The Stadium Steps is actually two tales. It's the story of a probation officer, the son of a slain police officer, raised by his mother and a parish priest who becomes a surrogate father to the boy. But Father Iggy is more than a paternal figure in the life of Michael O'Shea. The priest becomes his boxing coach and, at an early age, may have sowed the seeds for the traumatic brain injury, which leads to O'Shea's placement in a medical facility for patients with brain trauma. O'Shea soon finds that all is not as it appears in the Pacific Dunes Rehabilitative Hospital. Like the carpenter who can't bring herself to hire someone else to repair a broken piece of furniture, O'Shea takes matters into his own hands. At the end of the day, The Stadium Steps is a morality tale, so at its conclusion, like these characters, you ask the same question: "What would you do if you were Michael Ignatius O'Shea?"
