San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder's Office

San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder's Office Elaina Cano
Elected County Clerk-Recorder, Registrar of Voters, and Commissioner of Civil Marriages

MISSION: Promote public confidence by providing the highest level of courteous, efficient, and transparent recording, clerk, and election services to the County by the well-trained and committed staff of the Clerk-Recorder-Elections office, aided by leveraging technology with the utmost integrity, fairness, and legal compliance. In layman's terms, we serve several functions for the residents of Sa

n Luis Obispo County. Many in our community know us for the role we play in managing local elections. But we also hold and maintain all vital records for the County -- including birth, death, and marriage records that date back to 1850 -- and we maintain all real property records dating back to the formation of SLO County. Other functions of the Clerk-Recorder's Office include filing fictitious business names for residents starting a new local business and serving as the Commissioner of Civil Marriages. In this role we process marriage licenses and even conduct ceremonies in our office on designated days, and we can deputize anyone to be a marriage officiant for a day. We welcome your engagement here and on our other social media platforms, but please note that this is a moderated online discussion site and not a public forum. Are you in downtown SLO this morning? Stop by the Clerk-Recorder's Office at 11am and participate in the Random Alphabet Drawing!

The drawing uses old school Scrabble tiles pulled by visitors and staff to determine the order of candidate rotation the November ballot. It's a fun way to participate in the election in a very hands-on way. :)

Another reminder that those who like mailing their ballot should do it early (we recommend by October 26 in this election). ALSO! There will be *three* ways to vote in SLO County without mailing on November 3:

- NEW: Take your mail ballot to your assigned polling place, check in with the clerk, and deposit that voted mail ballot directly into the gray ballot box to be counted that night
- Check in, receive a new ballot, and vote in person (also gets counted that night)
- Use any official ballot drop box, including those at a polling place or Elections Office

Any of those ways will ensure that your vote is timely.

(Limiting comments on this one because staff is working on election prep is not currently available to moderate. We'll be back and happy to engage again soon!)

San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano called the trend “concerning” and “unacceptable.”

Election security isn't about pretending vulnerabilities don't exist; it's about finding them, fixing them, and strengthening the system before they can be exploited.

Independent security researchers regularly test voting equipment through responsible disclosure, sharing their findings with vendors so issues can be addressed before they're made public. California's landmark 2007 "Top-to-Bottom Review" is a great example: Researchers identified real weaknesses, and the state responded by decertifying affected systems and requiring stronger security measures.

Understanding the difference between a potential vulnerability, an attempted exploit, and evidence that election results were changed is essential to separating facts from misinformation. Strong election security depends on continuous testing, transparency, and improvements—not on the assumption that any technology is perfect.
