World Environment Day is a reminder that small everyday choices can add up.

Reducing waste, recycling correctly, keeping food scraps out of the landfill, using reusables, and properly disposing of household hazardous waste all help protect our local environment.

This week, choose one small action:
Bring a reusable bottle
Skip single-use items when possible
Sort waste correctly
Use your green cart for food scraps
Take batteries, paint, and chemicals to HHW

Small habits. Bigger impact.

Where do batteries go?

Batteries should never be placed in your trash or recycling cart. They can create fire risks during collection, transportation, and sorting, especially lithium-ion and rechargeable batteries.

Instead, take household batteries to a proper battery drop-off location or Household Hazardous Waste facility.

School’s almost out, which means backpacks, cubbies, desks, and lunch bags may be ready for a clean-out.

Before tossing everything, take a minute to sort:

Gently used backpacks, clothes, lunch boxes, books, and school supplies can often be donated or reused.

Clean paper, cardboard, empty bottles, and cans can go in the recycling bin.

Food wrappers, broken supplies, dried-out markers, and damaged items usually belong in the trash.

A quick end-of-school reset can keep usable items out of the landfill and help families start summer with less clutter.

Memorial Day weekend plans? A little sorting goes a long way.

Whether you’re having a BBQ, heading to the beach, or packing up for a picnic, here are a few quick reminders:

Blue bin: clean paper and cardboard, rigid plastic, metal, and glass

Green bin: all food waste, food-soiled paper, and yard waste

Grey bin: styrofoam, milk cartons/paper cups, pet waste, soft plastics, and compostable plastics

Celebrate safely and sort smart.

May is Bike Month in SLO County 🚲

Whether you’re biking to work, school, the farmers market, or just around town, a little planning can help cut down on waste too.

Bring a reusable water bottle, pack snacks in reusable containers, and keep a small bag with you for wrappers or waste until you find the right bin.

Small habits add up, on the road and at the bin.

Give your carts some personal space.

Collection trucks need a little room to do their thing, so please place carts at least 3 feet apart and keep them away from cars, mailboxes, trees, and other obstacles when possible.

Think: room to breathe, room to lift, room to not cause a collection-day traffic jam.

Your carts may be close friends, but on pickup day they need boundaries.
