Watch your step it's rattlesnake season! I found this Western Rattlesnake just laying in the trail with the only way around to step right in front of his face. I finally found a suitable stick and moved him off the trail. He liked it too much to move any other way. The 5 hikers behind me much appreciated it. This was out of the Irish Hills trail head at the end of Madonna Road.

Now is the time to hike the Three Bridges Trail just off of highway 41 west of Atascadero. The wild flowers are out and there is still plenty of green. I learned yesterday there are also plenty of mosquitoes out near sunset this time of year though.

One of my favorite hikes in SLO is the Irish Hills. Several trails but I like the Maripos/ King Loop. Just under 2 miles, amazing views, healthy climb.

If you need a reason to go for a hike today go check out the mysterious 12ft monolith that appeared on the top of Pine Mountain yesterday. Pine Mountain is part of Stadium Park in Atascadero. Check it out before it disappears.

One of my favorite short but very scenic hikes on San Simeon Point. The views and the thick forest of eucalyptus trees make it a memorable hike for just about anyone. Just walk down the beach right of the pier and look for the trail that leads up and into the trees. Dogs on leash are allowed.
