Hello City of San Luis,

We understand that as a community we are dealing a cat population throughout the whole city. There might be areas more affected than others, but the problem persists in all areas within the City of San Luis. We are working together with Humane Society of Yuma on their program Trap Neuter Release (TNR) to help keep a control on the cat population. This is a project that will take time and effort from all of us as a community, but we will not tolerate any form of animal cruelty. Last week, we received a call for service regarding a sick cat, while doing a physical exam at Humane Society, it was discovered that it had what appeared to be a bb pellet in its head area. Per ARS 13-2910 charges can range from a Class 1 Misdemeanor to a Class 5 Felony. We take these events seriously and if anyone is caught committing any form of animal cruelty, we will be prosecuting. If you are concerned for the welfare of any animal or witness any form of animal cruelty, please contact our Animal Control Officers at 928-341-2420 so an adequate investigation can be followed.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Traveling to Mexico? Know the Law Before You Cross the Border
If you are planning to travel into Mexico, it is your responsibility to understand and follow Mexican fi****ms laws.

Do not bring fi****ms, ammunition, magazines, or firearm accessories into Mexico. Items that may be commonly possessed legally in the United States can result in serious criminal charges in Mexico.

Travelers have been arrested for possessing:
• Fi****ms
• Ammunition of any quantity
• Loaded or empty magazines
• Firearm parts and accessories
• Other weapons-related items

Claiming that you forgot the items were in your vehicle, luggage, backpack, or personal belongings is not a defense. Violations can lead to:
• Immediate detention
• Arrest and criminal prosecution
• Seizure of fi****ms and property
• Significant fines
• Imprisonment in Mexico

Before crossing the border, thoroughly inspect your vehicle, luggage, bags, and personal items to ensure no fi****ms, ammunition, magazines, or firearm-related accessories are present.
The safest approach is simple: If you are traveling to Mexico, leave all fi****ms, ammunition, magazines, and firearm accessories at home.

Think Before You Cross. Check Your Vehicle. Know the Law. Avoid Arrest!

Heat Awareness for pets: signs of heat stroke.

At this time of the year, heat levels in our area are rising. We encourage all pet owners to stay alert to these weather changes and take extra care of their pets.

Heat stroke in pets can happen quickly and be life-threatening. Watch for warning signs such as excessive panting or drooling, difficulty breathing, restlessness, lethargy or weakness, and red tongue or gums.

If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and seek veterinary help as soon as possible.

Let’s work together to keep our pets safe, cool, and healthy during extreme heat. 🐾☀️

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or the beginning of summer, it is a solemn reminder of the price of freedom.

Today, the San Luis Police Department pauses to honor the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who courageously gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice represents the very best of our country: selflessness, honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protect others.

We especially remember community heroes like Marine Sgt. Fernando Padilla-Ramirez and Army Sgt. Ismael G. Solorio, whose legacies continue to inspire us both in uniform and in the communities they called home. These heroes were sons and daughters, husbands and wives, parents, friends, and neighbors, ordinary people who answered an extraordinary call.

As law enforcement officers, we understand the meaning of service and sacrifice. We recognize the weight carried by those who wear a uniform and the families who stand beside them. Today, we stand in gratitude and remembrance of those who never made it home.

May we never forget their courage, their sacrifice, and the freedoms we enjoy because of them.

From all of us at the San Luis Police Department, we honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day.

Happy Graduation Day Sidewinders!

But first, a few safety tips for tonight. Sober riders only, wear your seatbelt, stick to trusted people only, and keep your parents/guardians informed of your location at all times. One bad decision can turn this night of celebration into a life lasting regret.

Everyone attending the graduation, please allow ample time to arrive to the venue, follow traffic laws, drive safely, watch out for pedestrians, and enjoy this special night responsibly!

Happy Memorial Day Weeked! We would lile to remind you that the San Luis Police Department will be conducting STEP traffic and DUI enforcement from May 22–25 during Memorial Day weekend. Officers will focus on impaired driving, speeding, seatbelt use, distracted driving, pedestrian safety, and other traffic violations throughout the city.

Please have a safe Memorial Day weekend, drive safely, buckle up, avoid distractions, and always plan for a sober ride home. Remember, underage drinking is also a crime in Arizona and will not be tolerated.

To report suspected DUI or unsafe driving, call SLPD non-emergency at (928) 341-2420, 911 for emergencies, or 78-CRIME anonymously.

Yesterday, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, the San Luis Police Department joined law enforcement agencies from across our region to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Peace Officers Memorial Day, observed each year on May 15, serves as a time for our nation to reflect on the courage, service, and sacrifice of local, state, and federal peace officers who gave their lives, or were disabled, while protecting and serving their communities. This observance is sponsored by the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Yuma Lodge #25.

During this time of remembrance, we especially recognize Officer Joe Orduno of the San Luis Police Department, End of Watch: 4/3/1986. His service, sacrifice, and dedication to our community will never be forgotten.

As we gathered together, we also honored the families, friends, and fellow officers who continue to carry the memory and legacy of the fallen. Their courage and commitment remain an enduring example of selfless service.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
