Trump-endorsed Republican Congressional Candidate Skips Forum With Retired Americans As He Hides From His Support For Trump's Bill That Guts Medicare And Medi-Cal


SAN DIEGO, CA — MAGA Republican congressional candidate Jim Desmond was a no-show yesterday at the candidate forum hosted by the California Alliance for Retired Americans, ducking California seniors and people with disabilities as questions mount over his support for Donald Trump's disastrous reconciliation bill — as San Diego City Councilmember and Democratic nominee Marni von Wilpert called him out for hiding from the seniors he's hurting.

"Jim Desmond will do whatever Donald Trump tells him to do — even back a bill that guts Medicare, guts Medi-Cal, and pushes Social Security closer to the edge," said Marni von Wilpert. "But when it's time to face the seniors paying for it, he's nowhere to be found. CA-48 deserves a fighter who shows up, not a career politician who runs and hides the second things get uncomfortable."

Desmond has Trump's "complete and total endorsement," and he's backed it up by supporting the same Big Ugly Bill that stripped healthcare from more than 32,000 Californians in CA-48 — the same bill now driving deep cuts to Medi-Cal for seniors who rely on it for long-term care. He cheered on the war with Iran while gas prices topped $6 a gallon, then dismissed the pain on families as "no pain, no gain." Now, as CA-48 seniors confront what his bill means for their Medicare and Social Security, Desmond can't even face them.

In contrast, Marni von Wilpert has built her career fighting alongside working people — from serving as counsel to the House Education and Labor Committee, where she helped write the PRO Act to strengthen workers’ rights, to taking on corporations that violated workers’ rights as a labor lawyer for the Obama administration, lowering grocery costs for seniors on the City Council, and restoring pensions for city workers that had been ripped away by her Republican predecessor.
