Early Action vs. Early Decision: How Do You Choose?

Applying early can be a smart way to reduce stress and receive a college decision sooner, often by mid-December. But it’s important to understand the difference between Early Action and Early Decision before you apply.

Early Action is nonbinding. Students apply early, usually by November, receive an earlier decision, and still have until May 1 to choose where to enroll. In most cases, students can apply Early Action to multiple colleges, although some schools offer restrictive or single-choice early action.

Early Decision is binding. Students apply to one college and agree to attend if accepted. If admitted, they must withdraw applications to other schools. Because of this commitment, Early Decision is best for students who have a clear first-choice college and are confident it is both an academic and financial fit.

Before applying early, ask yourself:

β€’ Is this truly my top-choice college?
β€’ Am I a strong applicant for this school?
β€’ Can my family afford it without comparing multiple financial aid offers?
β€’ Will my application be ready by the early deadline?
β€’ Which early admission options does the college actually offer?

Early applications can be helpful, but they should be part of a thoughtful strategy, not a rushed decision. The best plan is the one that supports both college and financial fit.
