Sorry to just get around to posting this but it was a long night and a tough pill to swallow...
I lost last my bid for re-election.
We all worked so hard, and it's because there was a lot at stake! Unfortunately, when trying to take on significant power structures it's all too common for progressive candidates to lose their re-election.
We tried to tackle so many large controversial issues over my last three years:
GSMP contract, Chamber of Commerce perceptions and lease, Lion's club lease, School resource officers, Police accountability and public safety, staff salaries, equity, covid, airport expansion and air quality, sustainable economic development, government transparency, changes for the budget, tenant's rights, Cite and Release, decriminalization of ma*****na, updated our anti-discrimination policy to include gender identity and sexual orientation, fought for women's reproductive rights, and so many other things!
Looking at the results last night and seeing how many people just didn't vote in our local race, I'm realizing that the main thing we need to do is teach people more about their rights.
I plan to continue to stay engaged, because we all need to do more than just vote anyways. I'm gonna take some time for myself through the end of this year to recoup and plan on my next steps. I want to work on creating spaces and tools for people too, like the town hall document on my website BakerforSMTX.com, that will help folks organize, get engaged, and get elected.
Thank you all for your hard work, and know that I'm still here to work alongside you to make San Marcos the best place possible to live!
