The District Attorney’s Office announced in a report this year its investigation concluded there was no evidence of an illegal attempt to corrupt the process during the December City Council meetings. Later, there was a recall effort against Lee that ultimately failed and an apology by the City Council to those who were accused of illegal activity.

PRESS RELEASE - RECALL UPDATE

"The San Mateo Recall of Amourence Lee wishes to thank the many community volunteers throughout San Mateo, including neighborhood leaders, for their determination to bring integrity and accountability back to our city. They collected thousands upon thousands of signatures from residents to say “NO MORE” to Amourence Lee, who dishonored her sworn council oath, failed to perform her duties as a councilmember, and broke the public’s trust over the past two years.

The momentum of the Recall effort accelerated as more was uncovered about Lee’s pattern of failures, most recently culminating in the District Attorney investigation of her false extortion allegations, and her outright refusal to accept any responsibility and apologize to her constituents.

Resident volunteer signature gatherers were challenged by a short time window, unprecedented bad weather and harassment by Lee’s cronies. While we report today that we fell just short of our signature goal, we are proud of the courage of our residents as they spoke up against Lee’s abuses, bully tactics and divisive behavior – all adverse to the San Mateo Way.

Lee wants us to ‘move on and get back to City business.’ What’s lost on her is that with no integrity, there is no business as usual. San Mateans value and deserve honesty, integrity and accountability from our council members. They succeeded in making that abundantly clear. Proven by their signatures, Lee is now under the razor-sharp scrutiny of thousands of residents who will continue to closely follow her actions – because those actions will speak volumes over any of her words.

The legacy of the San Mateo Recall of Amourence Lee trumps the false narrative Lee served to the public, by stating the explicit desires of our residents – THEY WANT AND DESERVE BETTER THAN HER FAILED PERFORMANCE OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS. Lee should take no comfort in today’s outcome. The truth is that she’s irreparably damaged her reputation, and her brand of ‘leadership’ will be rejected should she consider a future campaign.
