We know how much our community values the beautiful, mature trees that make Central Park such a special place, and we’re saddened to share that one of the park’s oak trees must be removed due to significant damage. 🌳💔

In the early afternoon on Wednesday, Aug. 26, a large branch fell from an oak tree located between the Fallen Heroes Memorial and the San Mateo Arboretum’s native plant garden. Thankfully, no one was injured. 💙

Due to the size of the fallen branch, the severity of the break and its location on the lower trunk, the tree’s overall stability has been compromised, and it must be removed.

Over the next few days, crews will carefully and systematically take down the tree, remove debris and evaluate the surrounding area for any damage. The area has been closed off to pedestrians to provide a safe and secure work site. 🚧

We understand that losing a mature tree in Central Park is difficult, particularly one that has been part of the park’s landscape for many years. 🌿 While preserving our trees is always a priority, the safety of park visitors must come first.

In the coming weeks, staff will meet to discuss next steps and opportunities for replanting in the area. 🌱 We’ll share additional information with the community as it becomes available.

What are your favorite memories of the tree? 🌳✨ Share with us in the comments below.
