A major conservation win for Marin.

After more than 40 years of community effort, the remaining privately owned portion of King Mountain is set to be protected.

Congratulations to the many individuals and organizations who made this long-sought conservation milestone possible, including our friend David Moller, who helped found the King Mountain Open Space Association and has worked for decades to protect the mountain.

A family foundation and the Marin Open Space Trust have arranged to acquire 161 acres at the scenic site.

As part of Wildfire Awareness Month, May’s Parks & Open Space Committee meeting will focus on how Marin County Parks approaches forest health, wildfire resilience, and vegetation management across Marin’s 34 open space preserves as the region faces increasingly hot, dry summers.

County Parks staff Julian Geoghegan, Luke Bishop, and Sarah Minnick will discuss forest health strategies, fuel management near preserve boundaries, wildfire trends, and efforts to protect both biodiversity and nearby communities at the wildland-urban interface. Jon Campo will introduce and moderate the discussion.

The meeting will also feature an update from Bree Hardcastle of California State Parks on major habitat restoration and wildfire resilience projects underway in Mount Tamalpais and Tomales Bay State Parks.

Last Saturday, MCL members came together, caught up over pastries, heard from our Executive Director on the state of the org, and voted in a new board.

Compared to the day-to-day of policy advocacy and committee meetings, being in a room full of our members is an energizing reminder of how many people care about this work.

Congrats to the new board, and thank you to everyone who showed up.

Great to be out at Earth Day Marin on Sunday. Nearly everyone we spoke with shared a connection to the places MCL has helped protect over the years.

We kept getting asked the same question: what environmental issues in Marin should I be paying attention to?

If you were wondering the same, join our mailing list or come to an upcoming committee meeting to learn more.
