Do you know the difference between tsunami alerts? 🚨

Understanding alerts can save lives:
🔴 Warning: A strong tsunami is likely to cause damage. Evacuate to higher ground immediately.
🟠 Advisory: Dangerous currents and waves expected. Stay out of the water and away from beaches and coastlines.
🟡 Watch: Tsunami not yet verified but possible. Stay alert for updates and be ready to act.

Alerts may come through phones, sirens, or radio, but sometimes natural warning signs are the first signal, like strong shaking or sudden changes to water conditions.

When in doubt: 👉 Get to high ground. Don’t wait.

It’s Tsunami Preparedness Week!

Do you live, work or play on the coast? Potential tsunami impact areas include beaches and coastal communities. Marin County surroundings included. 🌊

In the event of a potential tsunami, caused by something like an earthquake, local authorities may issue alerts (watch, advisory, warnings) that encourage residents to seek higher ground.

In the event of a tsunami, some alerts will be official, others will be natural. Both are equally important.
If you’re at the coast and feel a strong or long earthquake, notice the water suddenly rise or fall, or hear a loud roar from offshore, a tsunami may follow. Move quickly to high ground. That could mean going up a hill, heading farther inland away from the coast, or going to the upper floors of a sturdy multi-story building if you can’t leave the area. Follow instructions from local officials, sign up to receive emergency alerts at Emergency.MarinCounty.gov.

¿Vive, trabaja o frequenta la costa? Las zonas posiblemente impactadas por tsunamis incluyen playas y comunidades costeras. Eso incluye los alrededores del condado de Marin.

Are you in the tsunami inundation zone? 🌊

Tsunami Preparedness Week is a great reminder to know your risk. Head to ReadyMarin.org, make your way to our Tsunami page where you’ll find the “Inundation Map,” type in your address to find out if your home, workplace, or school are in a tsunami inundation area.

Take a moment to sign up for AlertMarin, Marin County’s alert and warning system at Emergency.MarinCounty.gov. The AlertMarin system is how authorities will communicate with you about the need to evacuate to higher ground.

If you are by the coast and feel a strong earthquake, drop, cover, and hold on, then:
➡️ Move to high ground or inland immediately
➡️ Check the Public Emergency Portal for the latest information

✔️ Haz un plan de emergencia y mantente informado
Los tsunamis no pasan con frecuencia, pero cuando ocurren pueden causar inundaciones rápidas, corrientes peligrosas y mucho daño.

También es importante reconocer las señales naturales:

✔️ Build an emergency plan and stay informed
Tsunamis don’t happen often, but when they do, they can cause rapid flooding, dangerous currents, and widespread damage.

Natural warning signs matter too:
⚠️ A strong or long earthquake
⚠️ Sudden rise or retreat of water (ocean and bay-side)
⚠️ A loud roar from offshore
If you notice any of these, don’t wait, move to higher ground immediately.

Preparation starts before the waves.

Our Story

Ready Marin exists for the sole purpose of helping residents of Marin have a better chance of surviving a disaster.

While Earthquakes are a very real threat, it’s also incredibly important to be ready for other disasters like: Flu, Power Outages, Wildfire, Extreme Heat, Floods and Landslides.

Extreme Heat kills more people than all other weather related disasters combined (not counting the fictional “Sharknado”).

The most important thing you can do to help yourself in these scenarios is to have already made a plan.
