Some people serve their country for a few years. Others never really stop.

VFW Post 2453 right here in Sandpoint is proof of that. Free medical equipment. Firewood for veterans and neighbors in need. Rides to medical appointments. Weekly PTSD support groups. Scholarships for students. And a standing invitation to anyone who has served to come find their people.

Sandpoint VFW Post Commander, AJ Cruce, presented Robert Bickers of Selkirk Power Generations with a certificate of appreciation for his exceptional work in repairing and restoring one of our train cars. His efforts have ensured that the train car is now in working order and safe for use. Thank you, Robert!

Last week we had the VFW District 1 Commander Chris Reader at our Post swearing in the new post Officers for 2026.

We had our Open House on 16 July and what a crowd we had! The VA was there along with other groups taking questions, answering concerns and most importantly the attendees were getting results. Hope to see you all next year.

It was a great day for the VFW at the Sandpoint Independence Day Parade! We received our train engine back from the shop and rolled through town handing out flags to everyone with the help of the SHS JROTC troops. We couldn't ask be a better day to celebrate our nation's 250th birthday!

Thanks for coming out today on such late notice to honor our fallen hero. Captain Dan Shoemaker USA will be forever remembered in our posts hall of fame. Wife Monica, son Holden and daughter Hazel were touched and proud to know where Dad will be honored.
