During Law Enforcement Appreciation Week, we pause to recognize and thank the men and women who serve in law enforcement across our community and our nation.

Every day, officers, dispatchers, detectives, correctional personnel, and support staff answer the call to serve others—often in difficult and demanding circumstances. Their commitment to protecting our communities, upholding the law, and helping those in need reflects professionalism, courage, and dedication that deserve our deepest respect.

I would like to thank all who wear the badge and the families who stand beside them in service and sacrifice. Your work does not go unnoticed, and your commitment to public service makes a lasting difference in the lives of countless people every day.

I also want to extend our sincere gratitude to our community for its continued support, partnership, and encouragement. The trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the community we serve are essential, and we are thankful for the many individuals, families, businesses, and organizations who stand alongside us in making our community a safer place for everyone.

SCAM REMINDER:

A concerned citizen reported that today, several church members received text messages from someone claiming to be their Pastor. The messages addressed their members by name and requested gift cards, among other things. They have alerted their congregation, filed fraud reports with the FTC, and notified mobile carriers.

Here are a couple of tips:

1. Slow down - urgency to pay is a red flag.
2. Don't trust caller ID or email names they can easy be spoofed.
3. Never click links from unexpected messages.
4. Don't ever give out sensitive information.
5. Watch for payment tricks, asking for gift cards, crypto...

Everyone says that patrol officers are the backbone of a police department—and they truly are. However, the real unsung heroes are our administrative assistants. They answer calls, direct staff, keep everything organized, and help the rest of the department look more put together than we really are. The department cannot function without them.

Officer Hopman and his K9 partner, Hunter, were recognized at a recent city council meeting for becoming certified as a K9 narcotics detection team. We want to congratulate them on this achievement, which reflects their hard work and commitment to keeping our community safe.

To share some background, Officer Hopman has been with the police department for almost seven years and is part of the patrol team. His partner, K9 Hunter, who was adopted from a shelter, is nearly two years old and is excited to take on his new role.

We truly appreciate the dedication that both of them bring to their work!

The Sandpoint Police Department and the City of Sandpoint congratulate Officer Josiah Oedewaldt on his recent graduation from the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program, which occurred on April 10, 2026. The POST program is an intensive 14-week academy designed to provide law enforcement officers with the essential training and resources they need to succeed in their roles.

As summer starts, we would like to remind all of our citizens and guests to lock up their bicycles to help prevent theft.

Bike thefts happen fast—and often in plain sight. Protect your ride with a few simple steps:
✅ Use a strong U-lock or heavy-duty chain. Cable locks alone are easy to cut.
✅ Lock the frame, not just the wheel. Secure your bike to a solid, immovable object.
✅ Choose smart locations. Well-lit, high-traffic areas discourage thieves.
✅ Remove valuables, Lights, bags, and accessories, which are easy targets.
✅ Register your bike & record the serial number, which helps law enforcement recover your property if stolen.

⏱️ It only takes seconds to lock it…and seconds for a thief to take it if you don’t.

The US Marshals Division from Coeur d'Alene was actively working in Sandpoint to locate a male subject with outstanding felony warrants for his arrest. The Sandpoint Police Department (SPD) was informed that the individual had been located but had barricaded himself inside an apartment, with indications that he may have been in possession of a firearm.

In response, SPD coordinated with the Bonner County Emergency Response Team to ensure a safe resolution to the situation. Following a careful four-hour standoff, the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Bonner County Sheriff's Office team for their dedicated assistance during these challenging times, and I appreciate our community's understanding and patience as we worked toward a resolution.
