Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for Service members in the Reserve Components through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities. ESGR is a Department of Defense office seeking to promote a culture in which employers support and value the military service of their employees by advocating, recognizing, increasing awareness of the law and resolving conflict through mediation.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Virginia Committee sponsored a “Breakfast with the Boss” on Friday, June 26 at the Mechanicsville, VA VFW Post 9808.

A “BWB” is a breakfast attended by National Guard and Reserve Service members, the civilian employers of military members, and members of the military command structure. Cynthia Marquez, Virginia Committee Area Chair, served as emcee for the event, during which attendees were provided an exceptional briefing on the requirements and key facets of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), a law implemented at the end of the draft to help ensure fair treatment and non-discrimination of Guard and Reserve members, by Steve Villalpando, Virginia ESGR Committee Chair Emeritus.

Attendees also heard from Brigadier General Todd Hubbard, Director of the Virginia National Guard Joint Staff, who spoke on the recent support Virginia National Guard members have been providing the Joint Force, as well as their work with Virginia’s two State Partnership Program countries, Tajikistan and Finland.

Participating employers at this event included Robert Abbate, Nick Abbate, and Bill Taylor of Cornerstone Advisor Group; James Frazier and Robert Latham of Hayward Inc.; Jennifer Grant of the Virginia Science Museum; Jason Kemp of Pike Electric; Eduardo Marquez of Marquez Ceramic Tiles, Sheriff Greg Six and Josh Dula of the Hanover County Sheriff's Office; William Hager, Paul Varacalli, and Patricia Yurcaba of Richmond BMW; and Kurt Kosco of Patriot Shuttle, LLC.

The event also included the presentation of six Patriotic Employer Awards to supervisors at two Virginia companies; Richmond BMW, and Patriot Shuttle, LLC of Williamsburg.

Virginia Army National Guard Sergeant Nathan Jones nominated supervisors Patricia Yurcaba, William Hager, and Paul Varacalli of Richmond BMW to receive the Patriot Award and pinned each with the Patriot lapel pin. Ms. Yurcaba also signed a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve.

United States Coast Guard Reserve Lieutenant Commander John Garland nominated supervisors Kurt Kosco, Treva Kosco, and Chris Alper of Patriot Shuttle, LLC, a transportation company in Williamsburg, to receive the Patriot Award and pinned each with the Patriot lapel pin. Mr. Kosco also signed a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve.

We sincerely appreciate the service of Sergeant Jones and LCDR Garland to our nation, and thank BG Hubbard for his outstanding briefing and support of this event.

ESGR Virginia Committee is honored to share that Captain Bradie Gillispie, Supervisor for Diversified Protection Corporation for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Arlington, VA has received the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

Allou Kacou (not pictured), an employee and a Sergeant First Class in the Maryland Army National Guard nominated Bradie for the award. Allou serves in a critical role at the platoon level supporting service members training, health and safety, and is performing more than the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training with the full support of his civilian leadership team. His award nomination included the following narrative:

“CPT Gillispie deserves the Patriot Award for her exceptional leadership as a Site Captain supporting DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Multiple time, she has demonstrated an unwavering professionalism, reliability, and dedication within a high-profile federal environment. Her mentorship is reflected in helping at least eight of her Contract Security Officers to confidently navigate between professional civilian and military duties and workload. Through her steady guidance, institutional knowledge, and daily example of excellence, she has strengthened her security team's performance and overall contract support, making her highly deserving of that recognition.”

ESGR Virginia Committee is honored to share that Mr. Hasnain Ali Khalil (left), a Supervisor for Nakupuna Companies in Arlington, Virginia, has been awarded the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for National Guard and Reserve service members and their families.

Kia Jenkins (right), a Nakupuna Companies employee and Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force Reserve, nominated Mr. Khalil for the award. MSgt. Jenkins is assigned to Joint Base Charlston, SC, and is serving above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training with the full support of her civilian leadership team. Her nomination write-up provided the following reasons for the nomination;

“My supervisor and the entire team at Nakupuna sent me off on deployment with a showering of well wishes. Immediately upon news breaking that Al Udeid had been missile attacked, Ali reached out. I was literally still sheltering in place when he called and texted to verify my safety. He made sure to let me know to reach out if me or my family needed anything. Ali made sure my work was covered and ensured a seamless transition back to work upon my release from active duty.”

At the awards ceremony, Mr. Khalil reinforced commitment to our National Guard and Reserve colleagues by signing a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve.

ESGR Virginia Committee is honored to share that William Tworek (right) and Nicole O’Connor (left), Supervisors for International Business Machines in Herndon, VA have received the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes civilian supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

Curtis Pitts (not pictured), an employee and a Air National Guard member, nominated William and Nicole for the award. Curtis serves as a First Sergeant in the Ohio Air National Guard, and plays a critical role at the unit level supporting service members' health and safety. Curtis is serving above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training with the full support of his civilian leadership team. First Sergeant Pitts provided the following in the award write up:

“Nicole and Bill have not only allowed me to step away when necessary, but encouraged me to pursue this opportunity to better my career, learn valuable leadership skills, and provide exceptional care to my service members. Their support and dedication to those of us in the military has directly led to multiple Airmen in crisis being saved, Airmen who lost loved ones being cared for, and Airmen who were enduring extreme hardship getting the help they deserved. I could not fulfil my duties as a First Sergeant without my supervisors and I genuinely feel like they deserve more recognition than I could directly provide them.”

The Virginia Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) congratulates Ukwenga Irechukwu (right) of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) of Quantico, Virginia as a recipient of the ESGR Patriotic Employer Award!

United States Air Force Reserve Master Sergeant (MSgt) Robert Arroyo nominated Mr. Irechukwu (“UK”) for the award, citing in his nomination narrative that UK “has always provided excellent assistance for my military duties and career…UK actively assisted me in balancing my job, particularly when I’m on orders. UK and his Code 11D team displayed remarkable compassion throughout my mother’s death, providing crucial assistance to my family”.

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

During the presentation, MSgt Arroyo also provided UK the Patriotic Employer lapel pin, and UK signed an ESGR Statement of Support, pledging to continue NCIS’ outstanding support for its Guard and Reserve employees.

The presentation ceremony was conducted as part of the 11D staff meeting, and attended by nearly a dozen NCIS personnel.

ESGR Virginia Committee is honored to share that Paul Macpherson (left) and Claude Rhew (right), Supervisors for Vantage Data Centers in Dulles, have received the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

Benjamin Kransler (center), a Vantage employee and Petty Officer First Class in the United States Navy Reserve nominated Paul and Claude for the award. Benjamin serves in the Navy Reserve as a Electrician’s Mate First Class (Submarines). Benjamin is serving above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training with the full support of his civilian leadership team. Petty Officer First Class Benjamin Kransler wrote the following in the award nomination:

“My supervisors make serving in the Navy Reserve very easy on me. They are always asking about my service and ensuring there are no conflicts with schedules.”

Airrion Smith (not pictured), a Capital One employee and Specialist in the Army Reserve, nominated Veronica for the award. Airrion is currently serving on a mobilization tour and was unable to join in the presentation, but is serving well above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training Reservists perform, with the full support of his civilian leadership team. Specialist Airrion Smith put in the award write up:

“Throughout the years...my supervisor who has been very supportive of my journey from the beginning; from the time I left for Basic Training to Advanced Individual Training to returning home to Drill weekends and reclassification training. I have the upmost respect for and professional relationaship with my supervisor.”

The Virginia Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is honored to share that Charles “Tim” Hardison (left), Supervisor for the Federal Aviation Administration in Leesburg, VA has been presented the Department of Defense ESGR Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

Jason DeAraujo (right), an FAA employee and Major in the United States Air Force Reserve, nominated Tim for the award. Maj DeAraujo serves with the 512th Contingency Response Squadron in Delaware, and is serving above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training with the full support of his civilian leadership team. As Maj DeAraujo noted in the award write up:

“I have never had a supervisor as supportive as Mr. Hardison is of my Air Force Reserve commitment. He has made it clear that any time I have reserve duty, I will be released from the work schedule without question. He has never asked for documentation to justify my request. Mr. Hardison even went out of his way to get me in contact with an Air National Guard unit in his home state of West Virginia, which I then used to plan my unit's annual off-station exercise. Mr. Hardison's support has helped ease the burden of balancing two careers and provided a positive working environment. His efforts are worth recognizing.”

At the awards ceremony, Hardison reinforced FAA's commitment to our National Guard and Reserve colleagues by signing a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve.

ESGR Virginia Committee is honored to share that Chris Fries (right), Supervisor for Leadership Institute in Arlington, VA has been presented the Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

2LT Mateo Partelli (left), a Leadership Institute employee and Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard for Virginia, nominated Chris for the award. Mateo serves in the 144th Cyber Warfare Company at Fort Belvoir. He is serving above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training with the full support of his civilian leadership team, and included the following in his award nomination write up:

“Chris has consistently supported my service in the Army National Guard and has made it easy for me to meet military obligations without friction at work. He approved every military related personal time off (PTO) request I have submitted, supported mandatory duty and short notice activations, and encouraged officer professional development events that are consistent with the Leadership Institute mission. He treats my Guard service as a strength, plans proactively around training dates, and maintains a supportive professional environment that reduces stress during demanding military periods. His leadership reflects strong employer support of the Guard and Reserve and he is deserving of recognition.”

The Virginia Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is honored to share that Peter Goldsborough (right), Supervisor for Rune Technologies in Rosslyn, Virginia has been presented the Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award!

The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors who provide flexibility, time away, and care for service members and their families.

1LT William Svoboda (left), a Rune employee and First Lieutenant in the Army National Guard of California, nominated Goldsborough for the award. LT Svoboda serves in a Cyber Protection unit, and is serving above the normal one week a month and two weeks annual training, with the full support of his civilian leadership team. LT Svoboda included this in his nomination narrative:

“Since joining Rune in September, I have spent almost a month on various active-duty orders through the National Guard. At one point, I spent over two weeks for an overseas exercise that took me away from my civilian work. Peter has been nothing but supportive and understanding of my military obligations.”
