Ohio Coastal Management Program

Ohio Coastal Management Program The Ohio Coastal Management Program is administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It is housed within the Office of Coastal Management.

The Ohio Coastal Management Program was federally approved in 1997 and incorporates 41 management policies that utilize the authorities and programs of a variety of State of Ohio agencies. Three major approaches are used to implement the program, including:

1) Financial Assistance to local communities, universities, non-profits, and other partners – primarily through the Coastal Management Assist

ance Grants (CMAG) program, which provides grants each year – as well as targeted funding such as annual support for the Ohio Clean Marinas Program and Ohio Clean Boaters Program.

2) Resource Management through regulatory programs such as Shore Structure Permits, Submerged Lands Leases, Coastal Erosion Area Permits, Federal and State Consistency, and Shipwreck Salvage Permits as well as non-regulatory programs including the Ohio Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program and the Sandusky Bay Initiative.

3) Technical Assistance and Outreach provided through the Coastal Design Manual, Ohio Coastal Atlas, interactive maps, consultation with property owners, public events such as grants workshops and training programs, and presentations at meetings and conferences.

We had the opportunity to tag along with Dr. George Bullerjahn and staff from Bowling Green State University aboard their “RV Ziggy” research vessel on Sandusky Bay today! The Ohio Coastal Management Program provides funding for BGSU’s water quality monitoring on the Bay. The BGSU team takes regular samples throughout the summers, measuring nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), chlorophyll, algal composition, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and pH. This research helps us understand harmful algal bloom trends and effectiveness of efforts to address such blooms specifically in Sandusky Bay.

Today we attended the ribbon cutting for the Park District of Ottawa County’s Islander Woods and Trailhead in Catawba Island Township, which is now open to the public! The Ohio Coastal Management Program provided grant funding for a planned wildlife observation deck at the park!

To help celebrate , the Ohio Program has released a fully updated Lake Erie Public Access Guidebook, which highlights 201 public access sites and 320 sites located along the 14 major river systems that flow into the lake.

Free copies of the guidebook are available at our office in Sandusky and more than 30 locations in the Lake Erie coastal region while supplies last!
