Our annual fall cleanup at Oakland Cemetery will take place the week of Monday, October 5. 🍂
All decorative items at gravesites will be removed and disposed of so our staff can perform ground maintenance. If you wish to keep any items that were placed at a gravesite, please remove them before October 5. New decorations may be placed beginning October 10.

The City Commission will be meeting tonight, Monday, September 28, at 5:00pm in the City Commission Chamber at City Hall, 240 Columbus Ave.

All meetings are open to the public. There are two audience participation sections of City Commission meetings: 1) At the beginning, members of the public can make a comment about any items on the agenda for that meeting, and 2) at the end of the meeting, members of the public can make a comment related to any matter of city businesses.

Today we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sandusky's water service 🚰

On September 21, 1876, our first Water Works plant went into service on a site near where the Justice Center stands today. Voters had approved the project the year before and water was flowing 15 months after the first shovel went in the ground. The plant included what the Sandusky Register called the largest standpipe in the world. The standpipe would later be destroyed by the 1924 tornado.

In its November 5, 1877 edition, the Register described a time before the Water Works was open: "For more than a half century this city was surrounded on three sides by pure water without enjoying the luxury and comfort of decent water for domestic use. Our people looked with tender eyes on the waters of the "beautiful bay," and then turned from the sight to drink the underground drainings of barn-yards, old ditches, vaults and hog pens."

In 1940, our water plant moved to its current location, now known as Big Island Water Works, where we still treat and pump millions of gallons of water for the city of Sandusky and the surrounding region every day.

Have some yard waste you need to get rid of? 🍃

We're partnering with Barnes Composting to host our annual Fall Yard Waste Drop Off event in a few weeks.

It will take place on the following days:

▶️ Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 8:00am-4:00pm
▶️ Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 10:00am-4:00pm

City of Sandusky residents can drop off their yard waste at Barnes Composting, 1630 Camp Road, Huron, OH 44839, for no charge. Residents must have a photo ID upon drop off. This event is for residential yard waste only; commercial yard waste is not accepted. Additionally, Barnes Composting does not accept treated lumber, plastic, trash, pet waste, painted or treated wood, or waste contained in plastic bags.

Tonight is the last concert of the season on the Jackson Street Pier!

Arrival From Sweden - The Music of ABBA is coming back to Sandusky all the way from Sweden after being rained out for their scheduled show on July 3. We hope to see you on the pier tonight at 7pm to see one of the world's best ABBA tribute bands!

Thanks to the Lange Trust of the Sandusky Library - Official Page for bringing this show to our community and thanks to the Greater Sandusky Partnership for partnering with us to put on free concerts every summer.
