๐Ÿ’œ International Overdose Awareness Day | August 31

Overdose does not discriminate. It can affect people of every age, background, and walk of life โ€” and its impact reaches families, friends, coworkers, and entire communities.

Here in Sandwich, our public safety professionals see the reality of the overdose crisis firsthand. Between 2023 and 2026, Sandwich Public Safety responded to 32 overdoses, both fatal and non-fatal.

Behind every call is a person, a family, and a community affected.

Today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those we have lost, stand with those impacted by substance use, and recognize the importance of prevention, treatment, recovery, and compassion.

๐Ÿ’œ There is no โ€œtypicalโ€ person who experiences an overdose.

If you or someone you know is still struggling with substance use, the Town of Sandwich Substance Abuse Resource Guide provides information about local and regional resources for support, treatment, recovery, and other services: https://www.sandwichmass.org/1748/Substance-Use-and-Supportive-Services-Gu

Knowing the signs of an overdose and having naloxone (Narcan) available can save a life. Learn more here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1PaYe2aiGF/

๐Ÿš— SLOW DOWN - IN OUR TOWN: YARD SIGN PILOT PROGRAM

As students, families, pedestrians and cyclists return to our roads for the new school year, weโ€™re asking everyone to help us keep Sandwich streets safe. ๐Ÿ’™

The Town of Sandwich is launching a residential sign pilot program as part of our Slow Down - In Our Town public safety initiative. A limited number of campaign signs will be available for residents to display on private property for 30 days.

๐Ÿ“… Display period: August 31โ€“September 30, 2026
๐Ÿ“ Pick-up: Town Manager's Office, Sandwich Municipal Office Building, 100 Route 6A
๐Ÿ•ฃ Pick-up hours: Mondayโ€“Friday, 8:30 a.m.โ€“4:30 p.m.
๐Ÿก One sign per residence/property, while supplies last

Signs must be placed on private property with the property owner's permission and may not be altered or placed on Town/public property, utility poles, sidewalks or within the public right-of-way.

At the end of the 30-day period, signs and metal stakes should be returned to the Sandwich Municipal Office Building so they can be reused for future public safety campaigns.

Please see the following handout for additional details on the program: https://www.sandwichmass.org/DocumentCenter/View/11591/Slow-Down---In-Our-Town---Yard-Sign-Handout

Slow down. Stay alert. Look out for one another. Together, we can help make Sandwich's roads safer for everyone. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’œ OVERDOSE AWARENESS MONTH: NARCAN SAVES LIVES

During Overdose Awareness Month, weโ€™re highlighting one simple action that can make a life-saving difference: carrying Narcan (naloxone).

Narcan can reverse an opioid overdose and is safe to administerโ€”even if you arenโ€™t sure an overdose is occurring. Having Narcan on hand means you can be prepared to help when seconds matter.

Narcan is available in Sandwich at:
๐Ÿ“ Sandwich Center for Active Living, 70 Quaker Meetinghouse Rd
๐Ÿ“ Sandwich Municipal Office Building, 100 Route 6A
๐Ÿ“ Sandwich Marina, 31 Freezer Rd
๐Ÿ“Sandwich Hollows Golf Club, 1 Round Hill Rd
๐Ÿ“Sandwich Public Library, 142 Main St
๐Ÿ“Sandwich Department of Recreation, 34 Quaker Meetinghouse Rd

The Town Social Worker, Parker Monks, also has harm reduction kits available for anyone in need. Call 508-888-1212 or visit the Center for Active Living during Parkerโ€™s weekly office hours:
โ€ข Tuesdays, 2:30โ€“4:30 PM
โ€ข Thursdays, 10:30 AMโ€“12:30 PM

Or during Clinical Intern Charlotte Packer's weekly office hours:

โ€ข Wednesdays, 9:00 AM-11:00 AM

And remember, you donโ€™t have to navigate substance use or recovery alone. The Townโ€™s Substance Use and Supportive Services Guide connects individuals, families and loved ones with local treatment, recovery, support and other resources.
