The Sandwich Park District is proud to continue the tradition of presenting one of the finest parades. Come watch the Sandwich and surrounding community groups and businesses take the opportunity to celebrate. The Parade will step off at 10 am.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people were now free. This announcement came over two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had declared that all slaves in Confederate territory were free. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, justice, and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a time to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and to honor the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us renew our commitment to justice and equality for all people, and work together to build a more just and equitable society.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed annually on June 15, serves as a call to action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about older adults' abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Every year, an estimated one in 10 more aged Americans are known victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Experts believe, however, that such abuse is significantly underreported, partly because many communities lack the social supports that would make it easier for those who experience abuse to report it. Research suggests that as few as one in 14 cases of elder abuse come to the attention of authorities.

Anyone can make a report of suspected abuse of an older adult or person with a disability by calling Illinois’ 24-hour APS hotline at 1-866-800-1409. Join Elder Care Services in bringing awareness of the abuse of older adults and people with disabilities by participating in our annual Strides for Change abuse awareness walk!

The walk of 314 feet will represent the number of abuse cases received by Elder Care Services during 2022.

This is a free event and we encourage participants to wear purple.
