This week, CSO Stamm put the "Service" in Community Service Officer.

CSO Stamm learned that an elderly Sandy resident was unable to replace the batteries in her smoke detectors, leaving them chirping for days. Recognizing the importance of working smoke alarms, he stopped by to lend a hand and quickly replaced the batteries.

Sometimes public safety means responding to emergencies, and sometimes it means helping a neighbor with a simple task that makes a big difference.

As a reminder, test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year, or whenever you hear that telltale chirp. A few minutes of maintenance can make a lifesaving difference.

On May 20, 2026, the Sandy Police Department partnered with Guide Dogs for the Blind and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a pedestrian safety operation focused on improving driver awareness and pedestrian safety in our community.

During the operation, officers conducted 75 traffic stops and issued 53 citations for violations related to pedestrian safety and traffic laws. During one of the stops for failing to yield to a pedestrian, the driver was arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII).

These targeted enforcement operations are conducted regularly with the goal of reducing crashes, improving compliance with traffic laws, and keeping pedestrians safe on Sandy roadways. Please remember to slow down, stay alert, and always yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks. A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of consequences.

Starting today, Sandy Police Department and law enforcement agencies across the state will be conducting targeted traffic enforcement focused on seatbelt usage and overall traffic safety.

Wearing your seatbelt takes two seconds and can save your life. It also protects everyone else in the vehicle. Unrestrained passengers become a danger to themselves and others during a crash.

Don’t give us a reason to write the ticket, or for first responders to make that call home.

If your registration tags have been expired for 7 years, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll get pulled over.

If you get pulled over, there’s a chance the officer will discover your driver’s license is suspended.

If your license is suspended, your vehicle might get impounded.

If your vehicle gets impounded, it will probably get inventoried.

And if your vehicle gets inventoried, officers might just find your gun and m**h.

The driver was arrested and transported to the Clackamas County Jail on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Possession of Methamphetamine.
