A weekend of firsts. The first weekend in May and the weather did not disappoint. It was perfect for the first 5K Sandy City Parks and Recreation race at Falcon Park. If you missed it, there are 3 more this season you can participate in including the 4th of July, Midnight Moon Run, and Turkey Trot (my favorite).

First time eating at Utah Craft Ramen. Not sure why I haven’t eaten there yet, but wow, what a great restaurant and reasonably priced.

With a couple of incredible firsts, I had to figure out how to round out my weekend… figured first time skydiving with Skydive the Wasatch should do the trick. What’s up next? I’m open to suggestions. Sandy City Parks & Recreation

As an elementary teacher I get the chance to spend 7 hours each day with the future, the youth of Sandy. Each year I find myself invested not only in the academic success of each child, but also in their growth as individuals. The world welcomes them with open arms. The world also has tricky situations that are challenging to navigate. As technology continues to grow and become more engrained in our everyday lives, I wonder what the world will look like in 20 years. The opportunities are endless. I work in a short 10 month partnership with families to provide the brightest outlook for each child. It’s the unknown that can be troubling. A couple of weeks ago, as students were trickling in eager to start the day, I overheard a brief conversation. One child was telling another that they had TikTok on their phone. As I picked up my computer, the next sentence worried me. My cute little student said that they watch TikTok anytime on their phone and their parents didn’t ever ask questions or monitor what was seen. I enjoy TikTok. I have found educators’ tips and tricks helpful. I follow other veterans and service members. There’s cooking and local restaurants. But there’s also a darker side as there is on any other social media app. Being a parent today can be incredibly difficult, especially navigating the online world where we don’t always see what’s going on. I’m looking forward to hearing about keeping our children safe from the experts with ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) this coming Monday and hope you too can find their presentation helpful.

Fun free Sandy activity.

Heads up hunters! The Sandy Snowman Scavenger Hunt is returning next week! We'll have several snowmen hidden in various city buildings. All you'll have to to do is find them, snap a quick photo, and then send it to us. Each snowman you find counts as an entry for our prize drawings. We have 20 prizes that have been generously donated by local businesses, so there are many opportunities to win!

“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?” If you’ve ever heard the voice of a dispatcher on the other end of the line, someone is probably having one of the worst days of their lives. Many of the calls our Sandy Police Department respond to, begin here. Have questions on how you can be involved in creating a safer community, curious about our local law enforcement teams, or if you just want to meet K-9 Ca$h, the department’s bloodhound, stop by this Thursday at Bicentennial Park from 5-7 PM.

1928 Ford Model TH. The “H” is the frame style. When the Sandy City Fire Department bought the vehicle 100 years ago, firefighters custom built the bed, adding the water tanks and ladder. Fun fact, it was a chemical reaction that charged the tanks to pressurize them enough to spray water. That’s the story of the first Sandy City Fire Department Fire Truck. It was used until the mid 50’s. For the past several years, it’s been stored at the Tooele Museum. With the recent completion of our new Station 31 it will be on display in the reception area. I had a blast driving it for one of its last trips before having all fluids drained and prepped for long term storage. It’s incredible how technology has changed in the last 100 years. To start this beast, it took quite the process. Switches to turn on fuel flow then regulate richness, the ignition was on the floor. It had a high-low foot pedal, and a 3 speed clutch. Grateful I learned how to drive a manual transmission, although this clutch was very forgiving. The brakes were soft and the power steering was non existent but the video of me driving and goofy smile is 100% legit! Thank you Sandy City Public Works for the adventure of the week!

We live in such an incredible location. Hiked Bell’s Canyon Lower Falls today. I was relieved that the labored breathing was me and not some apex predator stalking a much slower prey animal. Maybe that’s why the kind hiker asked if I needed any help before snapping a quick pic at the Lower Falls. Reminded me of the last time I was on this hike. Fire Chief Bruce Cline (retired) had informed me it was an “easy 20-minute hike.” For those of you who have never staggered to this magically beautiful area, it is not easy and it is not 20-minutes. I can still hear his snickering as I completed the hike 3.5 years ago. The trail was dry and only slightly chilly. If you get a chance to get out and enjoy the area, I’d love to see some of your pictures. I’m so grateful for our Healthy Sandy Partnership that identifies areas for residents to enjoy the outdoors. I’m also so appreciative for our Sandy City Fire Department for the countless rescues they do each year here and in our foothills and canyons.

What a week! Congratulations to those that were successful in their election campaigns, and congratulations to those who put their heart and soul into a campaign but came up a little short. For those of you coming off the campaign trail or if you’re just realizing that the Thursday night meal plans are a lacking, here is a fundraiser opportunity that supports an incredible foundation. As an added bonus, remember, sales tax revenue helps our city thrive!
