🚒 Your local volunteer fire department may need you — even if you have absolutely no desire to run into a burning building.

When people hear that their local fire company needs volunteers, they often assume that means becoming a firefighter.

It doesn't.

Volunteer fire companies need all kinds of people, with all kinds of skills.

You may be able to help with fundraising, community events, administrative work, social media, photography, grant writing, maintenance, traffic control/fire, auxiliary activities, bookkeeping, recruitment, or simply lending an extra set of hands when there's work to be done.

Maybe you have a professional skill that could benefit your department. Maybe you're great at organizing events. Maybe you can cook. Maybe you have a few hours a month and just want to do something meaningful in your community.

There may be a place for you.

Our volunteer fire departments aren't just emergency services. They're community organizations made up of neighbors who choose to give their time to help other neighbors.

And keeping them strong takes more than firefighters.

If you've ever thought, “I'd like to help, but I don't know what I could do,” stop by your local fire department and ask.

On the morning of September 3, 1991, the Imperial Food Products plant in Hamlet had been operating for eleven years without a single safety inspection. 🕯️

At about 8:15 that morning a hydraulic line ruptured and sprayed fluid into the gas burners under a deep fat fryer. The fire moved fast through the building. Twenty five people were killed and fifty six were injured, in one of the deadliest industrial accidents in North Carolina history. Many of the workers who died were trapped behind doors that had been locked from the outside.

Investigators found that the plant had no sprinkler system and no fire alarm system, had never held a fire safety drill, and had never been inspected. OSHA eventually cited the company with 83 safety violations and penalties totaling 808,150 dollars. Plant owner Emmett Roe pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to nearly twenty years, and was paroled in 1997 after serving about four and a half.

Under the threat of federal intervention from the Department of Labor, the North Carolina General Assembly passed fourteen new worker safety laws. That is the legacy Hamlet left the rest of us, and it should never have cost what it cost. Richmond County remembers those twenty five people, and the rest of the state ought to as well. 🤍

Cape Fear Fd is currently working a semi truck rollover accident on the 421 bypass. Southbound lane south of Kelly drive is blocked.... avoid the area... (5 pm Wednesday August 26th)

Tuesday August 18th at 7:43pm....Lemon Springs Fire Department personnel are currently working at a tree on a car blocking Nicholson Rd between Sanders Rd and Stanley Rd. We are waiting for assistance fton NC DOT crews with equipment to remove the large tree.

Lemon Springs Fire Department will hold an "Annual Meeting" on Monday August 17th at 6:30 pm at the main station located at 1138 Greenwood Rd.
All members and taxpayers in the district are invited to attend for the purpose of electing 4 Board of Directors for a two year term.

🟢 E. coli tests remain negative, but affected area is expanded to include Eakes Road, Cedar Lane Road, Hancock Road, Blakely Road, Old Jefferson Davis Highway, and Oakleaf Road.
