At the May 19, 2026, Sanford City Council meeting, I had the privilege of presenting a proclamation to Charles Alexander in celebration of his lifelong dedication to education, advocacy, volunteerism, and service to our community.

Mr. Alexander devoted 32 years to public education, serving students and families with compassion and leadership as both a teacher and principal.

Beyond the classroom, he has tirelessly supported our community through volunteer service, senior advocacy, and leadership with numerous local organizations.

His impact on Sanford and Lee County is truly immeasurable.

It was especially meaningful to celebrate this moment surrounded by his fellow The Enrichment Center of Lee County, NC board members — and to witness the wonderful surprise appearance from his daughter, which made the occasion even more memorable.

Seeing the love and appreciation for Mr. Alexander in the room was a beautiful reminder of how deeply one person’s service can touch so many lives.

I am grateful for the opportunity to recognize Mr. Alexander’s remarkable contributions.

Sanford is better because of leaders like him.

Still reflecting on the incredible moments from last week’s Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.

From inspiring messages and uplifting music — to the joy of our preschool choir and the fellowship shared throughout the morning, it was a beautiful reminder of the strength and spirit of our Sanford community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event so meaningful.

Nearly 116 years after it was first built, community members joined the City of Sanford in celebrating the second (third? fourth?) life of the historic Sanford Depot.

Fittingly, the beautifully renovated building will be home to the Visit Sanford Welcome Center, which will open in the space later this year.

More recap to come, but here are some quick snaps from today’s ribbon cutting!

The Salvation Army continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of so many throughout Sanford and Lee County by providing physical, emotional, and spiritual support to those in need.

Their commitment to helping others — especially during difficult times — reflects the very best of community service and compassion.

This is why I am honored to officially proclaim May 11-17, 2026, as National Salvation Army Week in Sanford in recognition of the incredible work of The Salvation Army of Lee County and their 30 years of service to our community.

Thank you to everyone who serves, volunteers, and supports this important mission. Together, we continue building a stronger and more caring community for all. ❤️

Members of Sanford City Council and I were beyond thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievements of Southern Lee High School junior Nevaeh Williamson at the May 5, 2026, Council meeting.

Nevaeh holds two titles -- 2026 NCHSAA Individual Wrestling State Champion and first female individual wrestling state champ in Southern Lee's history! 🧡💙

Coach Austin Parmer joined Nevaeh at the meeting. She credits him and Coach Diontae Hill, as well as her Southern Lee wrestling teammates, for instilling confidence in her and pushing her to be her best.

Next up for Nevaeh is representing Team NC in the USA Wrestling Women's National Duals this summer. 💪

Her hard work, determination, and dedication to the sport continue to make Sanford proud.

Congratulations, Nevaeh! 🌟

The National Day of Prayer is a special opportunity for our community to come together in prayer, to lift each other up, and to reflect on our shared purpose.

This year's theme of "Faith in Action" is one that guides so many of us in Sanford. We see a need and we work together to meet it. We rely on each other, we support each other through the challenges, and we celebrate our successes. Our community is one that cares deeply.

I left the room today feeling renewed in that purpose and ready to reach out my hand to others who may need it -- whether that be to lift them up, to hold them steady, or to encourage them toward a different path. I hope that everyone left feeling as inspired as I did!

There are so many thank yous to extend. Saint Luke UMC - Sanford NC was a wonderful host -- and those preschoolers were pure joy. My sincere gratitude to the Sanford Area Growth Alliance for partnering on this event each year, and to Jimmy Randolph for serving as emcee today.

Thank you to Saint Luke Pastor Eddie Hill, Rev. Alice Ho**er (Works For Christ Christian Center), Rev. Bob Bridwell (St. Stephen the First Martyr), and Bishop Charles Mellette (Christian Provision Ministries) for leading us in prayer this morning, and to Ella Canoy and Adrian Lomabas (Sanford First Pentecostal Holiness Church) for their beautiful song. Our minds and hearts were filled with God's message.

Hamer Carter from Sanford Outreach Mission shared important information about faith has been put into action in Sanford, and where it is still needed. Those who feel called can learn more and donate at www.sanfordoutreachmission.com.

As we reflect on the morning and the Word placed on us, I hope we are all moved to action -- whether that be in big ways or in small ones. I pray we continue to help each other, to look out for each other, and to celebrate each other.

Sanford is truly blessed!

The National Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Thursday of May as a time for people across the nation to pause in reflection, gratitude, and hope for the future of our communities and country.

In Sanford, it was my honor to make an official proclamation of May 7 as Sanford's Day of Prayer at the May 5, 2026, Sanford City Council meeting. Thank you to Manna Church-Sanford, 1Hope, Sanford First Pentecostal Holiness Church, and St Francis Anglican Parish for accepting the presentation. Our city is stronger and more resilient because of the love our faith community pours into it.

I hope to see faces from across the city at tomorrow's prayer breakfast at Saint Luke UMC - Sanford NC, which is free and open to all. This annual event serves as an opportunity for us to come together in reflection, gratitude, and hope.

No matter how you spend your Thursday, I encourage you to observe the day in a meaningful way that fosters unity, compassion, and service throughout our community.

Sanford City Council held a small topping-out ceremony last week to commemorate placing the final beam of a second building on the municipal center campus.

The building is part of an expansion that will open additional office space for City staff and provide the community with a new linear park, its second free splash pad, more accessible parking, and a half-mile greenway that will connect the campus to downtown through the Sanford Central Green.

“It is truly special to watch this building come to life,” said Mayor Rebecca Wyhof Salmon at the ceremony. “I’m grateful for the work of our staff, our engineering team, and everyone on the construction site in providing a space that will serve our community in good stead for generations to come.”

In addition to the building, the half-mile trail is underway. It will connect to the culvert expansion at the Weatherspoon Street bridge.
