Rescue squad workers Tim Sellars (left) and Craig Buchanan (second from left) use the “Jaws of Life” tool in the aftermath of the two-car accident that resulted in the death of Lemon Springs teenager Susan Darlene Deal Saturday night.

Sellars and Buchanan are working on the 1979 Datsun in which Ms. Deal died and driver Jeffrey Clyde Cox and passenger Barry Lynn Bridges were injured. In the right photo is the car driven by Stephen Fulton Craig which crossed the center line and hit the Cox car head-on at the Kelly’s Crossroads intersection.

Craig and passenger Robert Neal McGhee were also injured in the accident.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the largest tornado outbreak in North Carolina’s history — a day that deeply impacted Lee County.

On April 16, 2011, 30 tornadoes touched down across North Carolina. One of the most devastating tornadoes remained on the ground for 67 miles, carving a path from near Sanford to just outside Raleigh. Across the state, 24 lives were lost and more than 300 people were injured.

Lee County was among the hardest hit. In the face of destruction and heartbreak, our community came together. We are forever grateful for the outpouring of support we received — not just locally, but from people across the nation.
Today, we honor the resilience of our residents and the strength of our first responders. Below are a few photos from the Lee County Emergency Services archives, capturing both the devastation and the incredible unity that followed.
