Congratulations on Your Retirement, Officer Watson!

After 20 years of dedicated service in law enforcement, Officer Adam Watson is retiring from the Sanford Police Department

Throughout his career, Adam has worn many hats, serving as a Field Training Officer, K-9 Handler, Fi****ms Instructor, Vehicle Autopsy Specialist, Court Officer, and perhaps most importantly, our unofficial Department Mechanic. If something had an engine, made a strange noise, or simply wasn’t working the way it should, there was a pretty good chance someone was going to ask Adam about it.

Beyond these roles, Adam has been a valued member of the Sanford Police Department. He has trained officers, shared his knowledge freely, and brought years of experience and common sense to the job. His willingness to step in wherever he was needed has made a lasting impact on the department. Thank you, Adam, for 20 years of dedicated service to our City and community. You will be missed!

Back to School Safety Reminder!

As students head back to school this week, you’ll see more children walking, biking, and riding the bus. Please do your part to keep our community safe by staying alert and driving carefully!

🛑 Stop for school buses: When the stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing, traffic in BOTH directions must stop. Never pass a stopped school bus.
🚸 Slow down in school zones: Follow posted speed limits and be mindful of changing traffic patterns near schools.
👀 Be alert at crosswalks and intersections: Children may cross unexpectedly. Always stop when directed by crossing guards.
📵 Eliminate distractions: Maine has a hands free law. Put down your phone, keep your eyes on the road, and stay focused behind the wheel.

Time Is Running Out to Cast Your Vote on the Comp Plan Vision Statement!

In August, as part of the City's Comprehensive Plan community engagement process, we're asking residents to help choose the plan's vision statement.

A vision statement is a short statement that describes what our community wants Sanford to look and feel like in the years ahead. It serves as the foundation of the Comprehensive Plan, helping shape the goals, recommendations, and priorities that will guide decisions about growth, housing, transportation, parks, economic development, infrastructure, and more.

Using feedback gathered through community surveys, public workshops, and other engagement opportunities, two vision statement options have been developed.
Your vote will help determine the vision statement that will guide the Comprehensive Plan and shape the direction of our community for years to come.

New Loan Fund Aims to Revitalize Downtown Sanford

The Sanford Regional Economic Growth Council and Partners Bank have partnered to launch the Sanford Downtown Revolving Loan Program, a new financing resource supporting business growth, property improvements, and continued investment in downtown Sanford.

The program provides $150,000 in total funding, with loans of up to $50,000 available for eligible projects, including business expansion, equipment, working capital, property improvements, redevelopment, and improvements to vacant or underused commercial spaces.

Designed exclusively for downtown Sanford, the revolving loan fund reinvests loan repayments into future projects, creating an ongoing source of funding to support the downtown business community.

The Deadline to Return Nomination Papers Is Approaching!

Interested in running for municipal office? The deadline to return nomination papers is Monday, August 31, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.

The following positions will be on the ballot:
• Mayor (1 seat, 2-year term)
• City Council (2 seats, 3-year terms)
• School Committee (2 seats, 3-year terms)
• Sanford Water District Trustee (1 seat, 3-year term)
• Sanford Sewerage District Trustee (2 seats, 3-year terms)

Candidates must collect the required signatures from registered Sanford/Springvale voters:
• Mayor, City Council, and School Committee: 50 signatures
• Sanford Water District and Sanford Sewerage District Trustee: 25 signatures

Nomination papers must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office during normal business hours and submitted by 5:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026.

🚨 UPDATE FROM Sanford Police Department 🚨

SUSPECTS REMAIN AT LARGE AFTER SHOTS FIRED AT SANFORD OFFICER

We want to provide our community with an update regarding the incident that occurred at approximately 1:12 a.m. today. During an attempted traffic stop near Shaw Street and Lebanon Street, an occupant of the vehicle fired at one of our officers and the police cruiser. Thankfully, no officers were injured.

Throughout the day, the Southern Maine Special Response Team and other regional law enforcement partners assisted Sanford Police with the search. This included assistance from the Old Orchard Beach, Kennebunk and Berwick police departments, as well as the York County Sheriff’s Office. The Maine Forest Service also provided air support by conducting a helicopter search of the area.
A K-9 search was conducted but did not result in any definitive leads. Sanford officers and York County Sheriff’s Office deputies also conducted door-to-door checks and canvassed the surrounding area.

The suspected vehicle has been seized by the Sanford Police Department. Investigators will seek a search warrant to fully examine the vehicle for evidence connected to the shooting and information that may help identify those involved.

Unfortunately, the suspects remain at large. The Sanford Police Department officers and detectives continue to search, follow up on existing leads and pursue any new information as it develops. We remain committed to identifying those responsible and bringing this investigation to a conclusion.

We also want to be clear about the nature of this incident: this was an act of violence directed at a police officer who was carrying out their duty and attempting to enforce the law.

We understand that the continued uncertainty surrounding this incident is concerning. Please remain aware of your surroundings. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, do not approach or engage them - move to a safe location and call 911 immediately.

We sincerely thank our regional law enforcement partners for their assistance and our residents for their patience and cooperation throughout today’s search and out ongoing efforts.

PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT FROM Sanford Police Department

ACTIVE SEARCH IN SPRINGVALE

At approximately 1:12 a.m. today, a Sanford Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle near Shaw Street and Lebanon Street. During the attempted stop, an occupant of the vehicle fired a gun at the officer and the police cruiser.

The vehicle continued to flee and was later abandoned. No officers were injured.

Sanford Police, assisted by neighboring law enforcement agencies, are actively searching for those involved. Police operations are currently taking place in and around the following areas:

* Blanchard Road
* Hanson Ridge
* Oak Street
* Lebanon Street
* Sunset Road
* Smith Road

Residents in these areas should remain alert and aware of their surroundings. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, do not approach, confront, or engage them. Move to a safe location and call 911 immediately. Those involved may still be armed.

We understand that this level of police activity can be unsettling. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as our officers work to locate those responsible and keep the community safe. Please avoid the affected areas whenever possible and allow officers room to do their work.
