ONE MONTH TO GO: SANIBEL’S FIELD OF HEROES ENTERS FINAL PUSH FOR FLAG SPONSORSHIPS

781 Flags Remain to Complete Tribute Honoring the 2,977 Lives Lost on September 11, 2001

With just one month remaining until September 11, the City of Sanibel is asking the community to help carry A Field of Heroes across the finish line.

The community has already shown tremendous support for the project, but 781 flags still need to be sponsored to complete the field of 2,977 American flags honoring each person whose life was lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

No sponsorship is too small — and no sponsorship is too big.

The City of Sanibel is inviting community members to take part in a powerful volunteer opportunity: the installation of 2,977 American flags for Sanibel’s A Field of Heroes tribute.

Each flag will represent one of the 2,977 lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The completed display will transform Sanibel Community Park into a moving place of remembrance ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

Over the weekend, the Sanibel Police Department was honored to attend the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Awards, recognizing outstanding impaired-driving enforcement efforts throughout 2025.

The Sanibel Police Department was nominated for Outstanding Dedication to DUI Enforcement for Small Agency, recognizing the department’s commitment to keeping our roadways safe throughout 2025. Officer Chiappy was also individually nominated for his Outstanding Dedication to DUI Enforcement during the year.

Thank you to MADD for recognizing the efforts of law enforcement Officers working to make our roadways safer.
