The Johnson Student Center is now open! I was fortunate to attend the grand opening last Tuesday, the 27th.

This beautiful building is the heart of the Santa Ana College campus and is regarded as the student hub. I look forward to meeting many SAC students as I will be holding my Student Trustee office hours here during the 2021-2022 academic year.

For more information, please check out the OC Register article about the grand opening of the JSC!

For those in the community college system that did not get their UC applications submitted on time, there is still an opportunity to apply! This nest academic year, the UC system has promised to accept an additional 5,000 students from California, so do not hesitate this is a great year to apply. The new deadline to apply is January 4th, 2016!

Two out of three transfer students who apply to UC get in, and we are doing all we can to make transferring easier. That includes giving students a little more time to complete their UC application. Transfers, who mostly come from California Community Colleges, now have until Jan. 4 to apply for fall 2016: http://universityofcalifornia.edu/press-room/university-california-pushes-back-deadline-transfer-applications

This past weekend I had the privilege to attend a conference and meet so many passionate student trustees from our region as well as throughout the state. I have learned so much over the past few days and will continue to learn in order to be the best student trustee I can be for RSCCD!

Also we have a Board of Trustees meeting tomorrow at 4:30 PM at the RSCCD district office on N Broadway in Santa Ana.

AB 955 was recently passed by the Assembly and is on its way to the Senate. Please contact your State Senators and ask them to oppose AB 955: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

California community college students could have more summer and winter course options, albeit at more than triple the current cost, under a bill being discussed by the state Legislature.

Last night, the Board of Trustees moved to postpone my LGBT History Month resolution until the Policy Committee comes forward with a better approach before October. If you would like to express your feelings to the Board, please email the Board's Executive Secretary, Anita Lucarelli at [email protected].

What is Assembly Bill 955 and why should students care? AB 955 seeks to expand the availability of high demand college courses in California; but, the expansion would be made possible by higher tuition costs, about $200/unit. AB 955 is like a toll road for education; as long as you pay the increased fees, you may take the courses you need. This bill cuts out the community college system's poorest students and favors the wealthy. Call your State Assemblymembers and Senators and encourage them to vote NO.

AB 955 would expand high demand college courses for Winter and Summer sessions in CA community college, but tuition would be raised to cover actual costs.
