The City of Santa Barbara is moving on from Flock — but the bigger ? is what comes next?

Before the City signs another automated license plate reader contract, residents deserve clear answers: about who can access the data, how long it is stored, whether it can be shared outside the City, whether immigration-enforcement access is prohibited, and who audits the system for misuse.

👀Changing vendors is not the same as changing the rules.

Any new surveillance system should come with strong safeguards, meaningful 📢public oversight, and clear accountability before a contract is approved.

Public safety and civil liberties should not be treated as competing values. Santa Barbara can protect both.

Vote Nov. 3, 2026. Local elections decide local power. And local power shapes everyday life.

🏠🛑🚨🚉📷🗳️Housing. Streets. Public safety. Parks. Transportation. City budgets. Neighborhood development. Emergency response.

Decisions are made locally — often by mayors, city councils, school boards, and other local officials elected by a relatively **small pool of voters.

Think about this: When turnout is low, fewer people end up deciding for everyone else.

Surveillance doesn’t fall evenly.

Communities of color already experience disproportionate policing and scrutiny. Expanding automated surveillance deepens inequities—through more monitoring, false matches, data sharing, and the chilling effect that comes when people know their movements can be tracked.

We said NO to Flock and NO to replacing one surveillance system with another.

Santa Barbara deserves a transparent public process, meaningful oversight, strong privacy protections, and investments that make communities safer without sacrificing ***civil rights***

NO FLOCK. NO RUSH TO VERKADA. 🙌🙌YES TO COMMUNITY SAFETY WITH EQUITY.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo —Witnesses are challenging ICE’s account of the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston.

Passengers said the van was *already parked and that officers were not in danger when agents opened fire. Their testimony raises serious questions about the use of force, transparency, and whether the public is receiving a complete and accurate account of what happened.

Accountability begins with the truth.
