Hermit of Walden Pond. Patron saint of the environmental movement. Father of nonviolent resistance.

The popular myth of Henry David Thoreau – often conveyed by inspirational quotes on coffee mugs, T-shirts and refrigerator magnets – misses the complex, highly social and fiercely engaged man behind the legend.

His famous observation that "the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation" perfectly diagnoses a condition that continues to resonate as we navigate our increasingly complex, fast-paced world. Far from the popular myth of an isolated hermit in the woods, Thoreau left behind a living, breathing philosophy for the modern era.

UCSB Library is proud to be the home of the Thoreau Edition project. By deciphering his cryptic handwritten manuscripts, our editorial team has stripped away decades of censorship to reveal the complex, fiercely engaged man behind the legend.

UC Santa Barbara's Thoreau Edition recently marked a major milestone with the publication of "The Correspondence of Henry D. Thoreau: Volume 3: 1857–1862" by Princeton University Press. Covering the final five years of his life, the 239 letters within the volume reveal a man deeply involved in political, moral, and scientific issues current in antebellum America.

Still thinking about this incredible night! πŸ“• ✨

A massive thank you to the hundreds of UC Santa Barbara students, faculty, staff, and local community members who joined us on May 7 at a sold-out Campbell Hall for the grand finale of UCSB Reads 2026 and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our award-winning common book program!

The expansive conversation between Michelle Zauner - Grammy-nominated musician and author of the bestselling memoir "Crying in H Mart" - and writer and professor Sameer Pandya (Asian American Studies) made for an unforgettable evening. πŸ“šβ€οΈ

Their dialogue traversed complex themes of identity, culture, grief, family, food, music, literature, and interdisciplinary creativity. Following the discussion, UCSB students asked thoughtful questions during a lively Q&A session. The enthusiasm carried well into the night, with the book-signing line stretching out the doors of Campbell Hall.

Huge thanks to our co-presenters UCSB Arts & Lectures and everyone who made this free public talk and the entire UCSB Reads 2026 program possible.

Overall, the milestone 20th anniversary year of UCSB Reads sparked incredible engagement across the entire campus and the broader Santa Barbara community. We distributed more than 1,800 free copies of "Crying in H Mart" to students and put copies of the book into the hands of community readers through local public libraries (Santa Barbara Public Library and Goleta Valley Library ). The book was also integrated into 27 classes across 12 academic departments. We also sponsored 30 events at UCSB and in Santa Barbara with a combined attendance of more than 2,600 people.

We’re still buzzing from the unforgettable grand finale of UCSB Reads 2026! πŸ“š ✨

On May 7, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of UC Santa Barbara's award-winning common book program, with a very special campus visit from bestselling author and Grammy-nominated musician Michelle Zauner.

While her sold-out talk at Campbell Hall brought hundreds together, Michelle also spent meaningful, intimate time directly engaging with our student community right here in the Library.

First, Michelle joined Professor Michelle Petty’s "Introduction to Creative Writing" (W&L CS 10) class (College of Creative Studies & Writing Program) to discuss the nuances of memoir, culture, and storytelling.

Then, students in Professor Brian Donnelly’s "Catalyst Writing Collective" (ENGL 106CW) class (English Department) had the unique opportunity to present their own creative works inspired by Michelle's memoir "Crying in H Mart" πŸ“• and receive feedback directly from Michelle!

"Crying in H Mart" resonated deeply across campus this. The UCSB Reads 2026 book was integrated into 27 classes across 12 academic departments, and we distributed over 1,800 free copies distributed to students. πŸ’™ πŸ’›
