Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and collaboration as we navigated this week’s heat wave together. Keeping our school communities safe and supported takes a team effort, and we appreciate your understanding as we adjusted schedules and protocols across our campuses.

Based on the latest National Weather Service (NWS) HeatRisk forecast models, all District schools will operate on standard schedules with regular dismissal times for tomorrow, Friday, August 28. No sites are forecasted to meet the threshold required for minimum-day schedule shifts.

How Schedule Determinations & Microclimates Work

Operational choices are evaluated daily at noon on a school-by-school basis using real-time local weather data and campus infrastructure. This allows time to shift logistics at school sites to produce proper communication to our community. Before a decision is made, the factors we use include:

-Microclimate Factors: Santa Barbara’s varied terrain, ranging from foothill and inland zones to coastal areas, means temperatures can differ significantly from site to site. We evaluate forecast models specific to each campus location rather than relying on a single regional average.
-National Weather Service (NWS) HeatRisk & HVAC Capacity: Operational schedule changes, such as minimum days, are triggered when a specific campus reaches the NWS Magenta/Extreme category or has severely limited cooling infrastructure.
-Home Cooling Considerations: In evaluating these decisions, we are also learning that some of the children who would be going home early during a minimum day may not necessarily have air conditioning at home. Keeping schools open on standard schedules when safe allows us to provide continuous instruction in a supervised environment.

Ongoing Heat Mitigation Precautions

Even on regular schedule days, all campuses will continue enforcing safety measures during warm afternoon hours:
Maximizing classroom ventilation, solar shading, and air circulation.

Rotating classes into designated indoor air-conditioned spaces and cooling stations.

Restricting outdoor physical activities between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and providing continuous hydration breaks.

We remain committed to providing a safe, supervised, and positive learning environment for all students. Thank you again for your continued support of our schools.

If you have site-specific questions, please feel free to contact your school’s main administrative office.

This message is an update on the operational changes required due to this week’s heat wave. Harding, McKinley, Santa Barbara High School, Santa Barbara Junior High, Franklin and Cleveland will have a minimum day schedule on Thursday due to forecasted extreme heat.

Minimum Day Schedules (Thursday)
-Parent Pick-up is Optional: Children are allowed to stay at school until the end of the normal school day.
-Student Supervision & Cooling: If you cannot pick up your child at early dismissal, or if you do not have a cool place at home, we will gather students in cooler, air-conditioned classrooms with full adult supervision.
-A-OK After School to Continue: A-OK will continue to hold after-school programming at elementary sites and will make adjustments to classrooms so they maximize the use of cooler, air-conditioned classrooms through the afternoon.
-SBHS Athletics Updates: Santa Barbara High School coaches will notify teams about schedule adjustments for practice and contests.
-School-Specific Updates: Principals at affected schools will contact families directly with exact dismissal times and logistics.

All campuses are restricting outdoor physical activities, maximizing hydration breaks, and utilizing shaded or air-conditioned spaces. If you have immediate questions, please contact your school’s main office.

One week down for some of our littlest learners!

Our preschoolers at Franklin Children’s Center started the school year exploring their classrooms, meeting new friends, and jumping into new activities.

It’s been a big first week filled with learning, playing and plenty of new experiences. We can’t wait to see how much they grow this year!
