CycleMAYnia returns this May with more than 30 ways to ride, explore, and connect across Santa Barbara County.

From family rides and guided tours to bike-to-work events and safety workshops, there’s something for everyone—whether you’re a regular rider or just getting started. This year’s theme, “Pedal Forward,” celebrates the simple joy of biking and the forward momentum it builds—connecting communities and opening up more ways to get around.

Ride to an event for a chance to win prizes, including an e-bike, and don’t miss the countywide Bike Challenge where workplaces compete by logging trips.

Even better, bike to the bus and ride fare-free all month on participating transit services—making it easier to mix biking and transit for everyday trips.

🎁 We’re wrapping up the AI Bike Map project’s 12 Days of Mapping! Today’s focus: median islands, diverters, forced turn islands, and full or partial street closures.

Here’s how to contribute before the first round of machine learning is applied:
1️⃣ Click the map-a-thon button at 🔗 sbcag.org/project/aibikemap/
2️⃣ Drop pins where you see these features in your neighborhood or along the commute.

Your input helps the AI model understand real community conditions when assigning levels of comfort.

👉 And remember—mapping doesn’t stop here. As conditions change, every pin you add will shape the final and future versions of the bike map.

🚦 Streets aren’t always straight—and that’s intentional. Features like chicanes, curb extensions, speed cushions, and realigned intersections are designed to slow traffic and make biking and walking safer.

Take part in the AI Bike Map project’s 12 Days of Mapping:
1️⃣ Click the Map‑A‑Thon button at 🔗 sbcag.org/project/aibikemap/.
2️⃣ Pin locations where you see these features in your community.

Your input helps the AI model consider roadway features as it looks to assign labels of high, medium, and low comfort to every street and path in the region.

👉 Keep following along as we highlight more features and add what you see to the map!

----------------

🗺️ Think you know your streets? Join us for the AI Bike Map project's "12 Days of Mapping," where your input will help update Santa Barbara County’s outdated bike map.

Here's one example of how you can help:
1️⃣ Visit the Map-a-thon website 🔗 sbcag.org/project/aibikemap/
2️⃣ Consider dropping pins into the website about traffic calming features you see every day in your neighborhood or on your ride.

By following these steps, you’ll help equip the AI model to learn about real comfort and safety conditions — shaping smarter, safer routes for everyone.

👉 Over the next 12 days, we’ll share pictures of traffic-calming features you may recognize. During the Map-A-Thon, look for them in your community and add them to the map!

---------------------------------

SBCAG is accepting applications for a 12-member ad hoc working group to influence a new countywide bike map using artificial intelligence (AI).

Funded by a $480,000 grant from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the AI Bike Mapping and Wayfinding Project is a partnership between SBCAG, UC Santa Barbara, and Simon Fraser University (SFU). The project will use AI to classify bike routes based on comfort levels, with input from the working group to reflect real-world biking experiences.

SBCAG encourages applicants from across Santa Barbara County with varied backgrounds, biking habits, and transportation needs. The project will build a bike map that truly represents the community—and can serve as a model across California.

The public can apply online in English or Spanish for one of the 12 available spots on the ad hoc working group. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on August 12, 2025. To learn more about the project or to apply to be in the working group visit www.sbcag.org/project/AIbikemap.
