It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Zivile Elena Vilija Gimbutas (February 14, 1947 – August 31, 2025).

Zivile Gimbutas, age 78, of Ojai, California, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

The daughter of renowned archaeologist and scholar Marija Gimbutas, Zivile carried forward her mother’s legacy with strength, clarity, and unwavering dedication.

A fiercely intelligent and gracious steward of the Gimbutas Collection, Zivile worked closely with OPUS Archives to ensure that the profound contributions of her mother’s work would remain accessible to scholars, seekers, and future generations. Her voice, care, and presence shaped so much of what we hold and protect today.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Zivile’s family, friends, and all who were touched by her spirit. May her memory be a blessing.

The legacy of Marija Gimbutas continues to inspire scholars, students, and cultural leaders around the world. In 2024, OPUS Archives welcomed Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė for a historic visit in her honor, accompanied here by a moving reflection from her daughter, Živilė Gimbutas.

We invite you to revisit this occasion in our current issue:

New this week on OPUS Archives:
“The Goddess and Marija Gimbutas” by Dr. Maureen Murdock

Psychologist, scholar, and author of The Heroine’s Journey, Dr. Murdock reflects on Gimbutas’ lasting influence on feminist spirituality, archeomythology, and the sacred feminine as a cultural force. Through vivid analysis of Old Europe and Gimbutas’ interdisciplinary vision, this piece reaffirms the importance of goddess-centered symbolism and the radical memory of peaceful, matrilineal civilizations.
