Today, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors today accepted the final report for the Santa Cruz Container-Based Sanitation Pilot Program, an innovative effort exploring low-water, low-cost sanitation solutions for disaster response, rural communities, and underserved residents following the CZU fires.

This pilot helped evaluate alternative sanitation systems that could support emergency preparedness, wildfire recovery, and infrastructure resilience in Santa Cruz County. The findings highlighted both the potential benefits and the practical challenges of container-based sanitation systems.

Thank you to Design4Earth (formerly GiveLove), County staff, partner agencies, and community participants who helped make this pilot possible through years of collaboration, research, and on the ground work.

Yesterday I had the honor of emceeing the celebration of the upcoming opening of the Santa Cruz County Bridge House, and it was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together. This new 32-bed facility will provide more than just a place to stay—it offers a pathway to stability, pairing housing with behavioral health services so people can truly heal and move forward.

Bridge House represents a collaborative effort between the County, Housing Matters, and many dedicated partners who are committed to addressing homelessness in a meaningful, lasting way. By focusing on person-centered care and longer-term support, we’re creating better outcomes for individuals and a stronger, healthier community for all of Santa Cruz County

Join County Parks this Monday, April 13, for the Santa Cruz County Parks and Recreation Commission meeting from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Simpkins Family Swim Center Community Rooms, 979 17th Avenue in Santa Cruz. One of the key agenda items will be a discussion about Floral Park on 38th Avenue, which will help guide future improvements.

Community input continues to be an important part of this process, and I encourage First District residents and all interested community members to attend, learn more, and share their perspectives as the Commission considers these potential park updates. For meeting schedules and upcoming agendas, please visit the Santa Cruz County Parks Department website, and written correspondence may be submitted to [email protected].
