Flood Safety Fact: Debris in rivers and floodways is more than an eyesore. It increases flood risk to our communities and is a threat to public safety.

When debris builds up in and around the river, it can block water flow, cause erosion, and add stress on flood protection infrastructure. This increases flood risks for our communities.

As part of our ongoing operations and maintenance work, PRFMA is removing debris from the river system to protect public safety, support healthy river function, and keep our flood protection infrastructure working as it should.

Join us! The Pajaro Valley Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program (PV MLRP) partner group, of which PRFMA is a part, is hosting a community conversation on Wednesday, June 10, 4:30–6:30 PM at Raíces y Cariño in Watsonville.

Community members, growers, local agencies, and others are coming together to talk about the future of least viable farmland, groundwater, habitat, and community interests in the valley—what’s working in current partner-led projects and what priorities should shape projects in the future.

Check out this video! Last week, PRFMA Crews completed levee compacting work on both the Santa Cruz and Monterey County sides of the Pajaro River.

Compacting involves adding a layer of soil to the top of the levee and then using heavy equipment to compress it, which increases levee strength and reduces opportunities for water to go through or under the levee.

Construction spotlight: Work continues on the Reach 6 segment of the Pajaro River at Watsonville project, where our crews are driving steel sheet piles as part of planned levee construction.

Sheet piles act as underground barriers to reduce water seepage, improve levee stability, and ultimately improve flood protection for our communities during high-water events.
