A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 3 AM Sunday through 3 AM Wednesday for Pacific Coast beaches. Long-period S-SW swell will generate hazardous conditions at the beach, including sneaker waves and strong rip currents. Stay back from the water’s edge, stay off of jetties and piers, and NEVER turn your back on the ocean.

⚠️ BEACH HAZARDS WARNING ⚠️

Over the past few weeks, law enforcement and fire crews have responded to an increased number of water rescues. With warm weather expected this weekend, beaches across Santa Cruz County are expected to be crowded. Please keep safety a top priority:

•Never turn your back on the ocean.
•Watch for sneaker waves and changing surf conditions. These powerful waves can surge much higher and farther up the beach than expected.
•Know how to recognize and respond to rip currents.
•Keep children within arm’s reach near the water.
•Swim near staffed lifeguard towers whenever possible.
•Stay off rocks, jetties, and driftwood near the surf zone.

Elevated temperatures and a long-period southerly swell are creating dangerous ocean conditions. A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 9:00 p.m. June 11, with hazardous surf expected through the weekend.
Stay alert, stay informed, and help keep our beaches safe.

The US National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey California has issued a Moderate Heat Risk for today. This level of heat brings a risk of heat-related illnesses for sensitive populations, including children, the elderly, and people who work or live outdoors. Take breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water!

During hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged in ways you may not expect. When your body heats too rapidly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, you may experience a heat-related illness. Stay Weather-Ready by learning the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses.

US National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey California has noted heat in our forecast for today and tomorrow, with high temperatures reaching the 80s across the coastal plain, into the lower to middle 90s in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Never leave children, elderly adults, or pets in parked, unattended vehicles! Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to dangerous levels for people and pets. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate internal temperature. weather.gov/safety/heat-children-pets

🌊 HAZARDOUS BEACH CONDITIONS EXPECTED FRIDAY–SATURDAY 🌊

Heading to the coast this weekend? Keep safety at the top of your mind. An incoming long-period southwest (SW) swell will bring heightened dangers to our coastline.

What: Increased risk of dangerous sneaker waves and strong rip currents.

Where: All Pacific Coast beaches across the Bay Area and Central Coast, with the highest risk found at southwest-facing beaches.

When: From 3:00 AM Friday through 9:00 AM Saturday.

Impacts & Safety Tips:
Sneaker waves can pull unsuspecting beachgoers into the cold, turbulent Pacific Ocean without warning. If you are visiting the coast, stay well back from the water, stay off coastal rocks and jetties, and NEVER turn your back on the ocean.
