FOR NOVEMBER 2022 WE ARE RUNNING A CAMPAIGN TO OPPOSE THE MEASURE N ANOTHER MEASURE FROM THE AMATEUR AUTHORS OF THE DEFEATED EXTREME RENT CONTROL MEASURE M.
Measure N hangs a $6000 tax over everyone and forces them to prove they were home enough, every year, in order to avoid owing the money.
People should be able to come and go freely without City control.
With this law it is a crime for homeowners to not pay the $6,000 tax if they arenโt home enough. Itโs also a misdemeanor each and every day homeowners forget to register. Itโs a misdemeanor each and every day homeowners' annual legal affidavit of occupancy is late. A better-written law would use fines as penalties, not misdemeanors. Itโs a severe structural flaw to write a law where even a minor infraction is a misdemeanor.
This law raises serious privacy concerns. Random annual audits will require homeowners to submit three years of documentation and evidence to prove their innocence. The evidence required for homeowners to prove their innocence is undefined in the law, but the criminal penalties are well-defined and explicit. This seems unfair. Who will define the evidence needed to prove innocence? The law establishes a politically appointed committee that must include a UCSC student, two low-income renters and a union member with broad authority.
