Honoring my dear friend and colleague Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, and joining with Senator Laird, the County Board of Supervisors and many grateful residents in thanking her for 20 years of “kick-ass” service as north Santa Cruz County’s representative in Congress. We’ll miss you Anna, but know you’ll be strong partner with North County’s new representative.

On this spectacular day on the Monterey Bay we celebrated the $3 million I secured in the state budget for San Jose State University’s Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. Funds will be used to refurbish the dock used by vessels to conduct critical ocean research.

Last week, I was grateful to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Wildlife Corridor at Laurel Curve on Hwy 17. This project has opened doors for similar future projects to succeed, helping connect open space and improve the safety of wildlife traversing their historic territories. Investment and advocacy from the community helped to ensure the Corridor would become a reality. Many thanks to the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, CalTrans, CA Fish & Wildlife, and the numerous organizations involved in bringing this project forward.

According to the IRS, more than half of recipients pay someone to prepare their taxes. If you made under $57,000 in 2021, you don’t have to. You can file for free with IRS-trained volunteers online or in person. Visit CalEITC4Me.org to learn how.

To help Monterey County combat COVID-19, the city of Seaside firefighters and EMTs are holding vaccine clinics for Monterey County residents on Thursday and Saturday, in partnership with Montage Health. They will be at Laguna Grande Park, 2-7pm Thursday, with the J&J vaccine, for those 18 or older. On Saturday they will be at the Boys & Girls Club from 10am – 2pm with the Pfizer vaccine for those 16 or older. On Saturday, they will also provide a free shave ice from Kona Ice for those who get vaccinated.

I am proud to stand in solidarity with our UC lecturers as they fight for a fair new contract, basic job stability, and common sense workplace protections. These teacher are essential to the educational mission of the University of California and these protections allow them to return to courses, many of which they have taught for years. Despite UC lecturers teaching at least 30% of all credit hours, the median length of service for a lecturer is only one year. Job stability and fair compensation for UC lecturers would lead to a more professional and robust learning environment for everyone, and would allow students to have a more predictable and continually improving teaching faculty. I urge the UC to step up and meet the basic needs of our UC teachers.
