We served 109 Nuestra Jornada participants this Spring! Nuestra Jornada is a program for students who have lost a loved one due to death or immigration related separation. We hosted 8 school groups in the Santa Fe Public Schools and 2 on site groups for youth and their caregivers. Check out the words of a longtime facilitator after the Milagro Middle School group:

We’re celebrating the completion of a year-long internship with Ryn Cameron, who brought so much warmth, creativity, and steadiness to our middle school grief groups this year. We’re so grateful to the Hestia Foundation and the Santa Fe Community Foundation for supporting these groups and making it possible for our social work and counseling interns to have such meaningful and fun placements to learn alongside their group participants.

Ryn recently reflected on their time at Gerard’s House:

"I am grateful for my time with Gerard’s House, the staff, the team of interns and the participants.

Gerard’s House supervision puts in the work to notice and nurture your strengths while offering kind and direct feedback about where growth is needed. This happens both in official supervision and when guidance is needed throughout the day. I felt comfortable going to my supervisors with any issue I had because they fostered such a supportive and non-judgmental space. This helped me to share more vulnerably and to ultimately learn more deeply.

The field of social work is often stretched so thin that staff gets burned out from overwork. The work culture of Gerard’s House respects the humanity of their interns by advocating for staff to slow down and take time to process. This helped me learn and maintain self care skills that will help prevent future burn out and detachment.

I got so much out of the groups both on a personal and professional level. On a professional level, I got to practice core conditions using the skill of reflective listening. I also learned many nuances of group work and gained confidence in my facilitation skills. Personally I learned from each participant about how deep grief can go, which helped me to treasure the people I love in my life."

The voices of the moms in our Sharing and Healing Program remind us why creating spaces for connection, support, and healing when grieving matters.

Here is what some participants have shared about their experience in the group:

💜 “It’s wonderful to be able to share with everyone. For me, it is something very valuable.”

💜 “This is an excellent group. It helps us heal and rebuild ourselves emotionally. I am very grateful to everyone.”

💜 “I’m so glad groups like this exist. They help us mentally and emotionally, and they also help us connect with other people. Thank you so much for the support.”

We are grateful to every mom in our Sharing and Healing program who trusts us with their stories and allows us to walk alongside them in their grief and healing journey. ❤️‍🩹

So much appreciation for the kind and hardworking team at Texas Roadhouse for their generous donation of 36 delicious bbq chicken dinners and boxes of their famous rolls for our Summer Family Night for the 4-6 year olds!

Out youngest grievers were very happy after a fun and emotional day of activities to sit down with their families for a comforting meal.

Caregivers also loved getting a night off from figuring out dinner plans ;)

THANK YOU!

This month, Gerard’s House is spotlighting “The Phone Booth in the Garden” by Heather Smith and Rachel Wada.

Inspired by the real-life Wind Phone in Japan, the story follows a young boy named Makio as he struggles with the loss of his father. While visiting a garden with a disconnected phone booth, Makio discovers a space where people speak their thoughts, memories, and feelings aloud to loved ones they miss. Through this experience, he begins to understand that grief doesn’t have to be carried alone.

Expressing grief, whether through talking, writing, art, or traditions, can help children process difficult emotions in healthy ways. Grief often feels isolating, but community support and opportunities to share memories can remind children and teens that their feelings are valid and that healing happens through connection.

At Gerard’s House, we support children, teens, and families navigating the death or separation of a loved one. Through peer support and compassion kids can find safe ways to express themselves and feel less alone in their grief journey.
