This month, Gerard’s House is spotlighting “The Phone Booth in the Garden” by Heather Smith and Rachel Wada.

Inspired by the real-life Wind Phone in Japan, the story follows a young boy named Makio as he struggles with the loss of his father. While visiting a garden with a disconnected phone booth, Makio discovers a space where people speak their thoughts, memories, and feelings aloud to loved ones they miss. Through this experience, he begins to understand that grief doesn’t have to be carried alone.

Expressing grief, whether through talking, writing, art, or traditions, can help children process difficult emotions in healthy ways. Grief often feels isolating, but community support and opportunities to share memories can remind children and teens that their feelings are valid and that healing happens through connection.

At Gerard’s House, we support children, teens, and families navigating the death or separation of a loved one. Through peer support and compassion kids can find safe ways to express themselves and feel less alone in their grief journey.

Our group participants frequently bring up that their friends are afraid to spend time with them because they worry they will say the wrong thing. If you know someone who is grieving, don't be afraid to check in on them and maybe meet for a cup of coffee. You don't have to say the "right" thing, just be with them, and listen.

If you are currently grieving and would like learn more about our adult peer support groups, please give us a call at 505-416-5646 or email us at [email protected]. Our groups offer the opportunity to sit in a room with other people who "get it."

Our Mothers Sharing & Healing program just wrapped up the final grief support group of this session 💛

We closed with a beautiful, hands-on activity led by Kemely Gomez from the Museum of International Folk Art. Moms and children decorated flower pots with colors and images representing how they care for and nurture themselves during times of grief. Together, they then planted a flower, symbolizing growth, resilience, and ongoing healing 🌱

A heartfelt thank you to the Museum of International Folk Art for bringing such meaningful, culturally grounded activities to our group, and to Many Mothers of Santa Fe for letting us use their space for these special evenings.

We are so grateful to the moms and families who showed up with openness, strength, and care for one another throughout this journey 💕

This month, Gerard’s House is spotlighting "A Terrible Thing Happened", a story about coping with trauma and finding the courage to talk about difficult experiences.

It follows Sherman, a raccoon who has witnessed something upsetting and isn’t quite sure how to process it. Through patience, support, and the help of a caring adult, Sherman learns that sharing his feelings can make a heavy burden feel lighter.

That’s exactly what Gerard’s House is all about. Based in Santa Fe, we’re here for kids and teens navigating the death or separation of a loved one. Adults often want to help but aren’t sure how. Our program offers peer support and understanding so kids can find connection, healing, and a safe place to share their feelings.

Swing by 3204 Mercantile Ct , Santa Fe, to check out our grief library and see how Gerard’s House helps kids turn difficult experiences into understanding and connection.
