Yesterday, the interim Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee heard from Chief Public Defender Ben Baur and our team about ongoing staffing challenges at the Law Offices of the Public Defender. With a vacancy rate over 21%, we are nearing a tipping point where our ability to provide representation across New Mexico could be impacted.

This affects New Mexicans in every corner of the state. Lawmakers from both parties expressed interest in addressing pay disparities and caseload demands.

Public defenders and experts warned New Mexico lawmakers that understaffing and caseloads could threaten defendants' access to attorneys.
