June 5–7 is Wear Orange Weekend.

Orange was chosen for Gun Violence Awareness because it’s the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others — a color that symbolizes safety and visibility.

This weekend, wear orange to honor survivors, remember lives lost to gun violence, and show your support for safer communities.

At Esperanza Shelter, we recognize the connection between gun violence and domestic violence, and we remain committed to prevention, education, and hope for every survivor.

Wear orange. Speak up. Stand together.

Someone dies from gun violence in New Mexico about every 16 hours.

During Gun Violence Awareness Month, Esperanza Shelter stands with survivors, families, advocates, and communities working to prevent violence and save lives.

Gun violence and domestic violence are deeply connected — and prevention starts with education, awareness, support, and community action.

Together, we can build safer homes and safer communities for everyone.

In Memory of Victoria Romero

Today, we honor the life of Victoria Romero. Our hearts are with her loved ones, friends, and everyone in our community affected by this tragic loss.

Domestic violence can escalate in dangerous and sometimes lethal ways. While we cannot change what happened, we can work together to recognize warning signs, support survivors, and help prevent future tragedies.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, help is available. You do not have to navigate it alone.

Esperanza Shelter provides free, confidential support, advocacy, emergency shelter, safety planning, and resources for individuals and families affected by domestic violence, including those who cause harm.

📞 Reach out today. Help is available 24/7. 505-416-7184 or 888-473-5312.

🏓 **Dynamic Duo Alert!** 🏓

Who knew leadership development would involve pickleball paddles? 😄

We're proud to share that two members of Esperanza Shelter's Leadership Team were named the **"Dynamic Duo"** while learning the ropes of pickleball at a recent Chamber of Commerce social hosted by Forked Lightning Racquet Club!

The event was a great opportunity to connect with community partners, build new relationships, and step outside our comfort zones—all while having a little fun on the court.

Congratulations to our Dynamic Duo for bringing teamwork, enthusiasm, and plenty of laughs to the game. We may not be ready for the professional circuit just yet, but we're always ready to learn, grow, and strengthen the connections that help support our community.

🧡 Wear Orange for Gun Violence Awareness

Today the Esperanza Team wears orange in honor of Wear Orange Weekend. We join people across the country in wearing orange to honor survivors, remember those whose lives have been lost to gun violence, and support efforts to create safer communities.

Why orange? It's the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others—a symbol of safety, visibility, and the belief that every life matters.

At Esperanza Shelter, we recognize the connection between gun violence and domestic violence and the importance of prevention, education, and support for survivors.

Wear orange. Start conversations. Show your support.

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month.

In New Mexico, firearm deaths remain among the highest in the nation. According to CDC data, New Mexico had the 2nd highest gun death rate in the U.S. in 2024.

Gun violence is not separate from domestic violence. The presence of a firearm in an abusive relationship significantly increases the risk of homicide.

At Esperanza Shelter, we believe prevention, education, and community support save lives.
