The Guild is pleased to announce that the Minnesota House and Senate reached an agreement on Thursday, May 14th that secures funding needed to launch a Minnesota Certified Prescribed Burn Manager program.

The Guild has been working with the University of Minnesota Extension, Minnesota Prescribed Fire Council, and other organizations on the development of this program. This funding will allow Extension to hire an educator to coordinate CPBM program development, delivery, and outreach over the next three years.

The CPBM program will create a standardized, Minnesota-specific pathway for certifying prescribed burn managers — helping build the skilled workforce needed to safely and effectively expand the use of prescribed fire across the landscape.

Happy 5-Year Anniversary at the Guild to Southwest Program Manager Rachel Bean!

Rachel is a vital part of the Southwest Guild team — almost always arriving with her well-loved and seemingly bottomless thermos of hot tea in hand, and ever ready to lend a helping hand. Beyond managing both the Fire Adapted Communities New Mexico program and the Guild's Community Wildfire Defense Grant project in Santa Fe, she is also an exceptional field forester, community organizer, and colleague. And if that weren't enough, Rachel brings the same tireless dedication to prescribed burns, where she serves as a dependable and thorough fire effects monitor.

Happy 5-Year Anniversary at the Guild to Southwest Project Coordinator Sarah DeMay!

Not only does Sarah bring over 25 years of wildland fire management experience to her role at the Guild, she also brings a strong work ethic and a natural ability to connect with people. Whether she's serving as a burn manager on a Guild prescribed burn, leading a group of fire ecology enthusiasts on a field tour, teaching Forest Stewards Youth Corps crews in the classroom and in the field, or writing a watershed protection plan, Sarah consistently demonstrates leadership, professionalism, humor, and a collaborative spirit.

Remembering Henry Carey, one of our founding members, on the one-year anniversary of his passing. Jan-Willem Jansens, president of The Forest Trust, has written a beautiful tribute capturing Henry's legacy — from founding the Forest Stewards Guild to building community forestry programs that shaped the field nationwide. We're grateful for his life and work, and for everyone who continues to carry his vision forward. 🌲
