Internship Reflections

Addison Ortiz, New Mexico Military Museum Summer Intern 2026

During my summer internship here at the New Mexico military museum, I have had the opportunity to work on many projects including housing the insignia collection which are services patches men wear on their uniforms and as rehousing the historic navy lighter collection as well as object research. I was tasked with choosing an object for one of their many collections and researching and writing about the history and use of the object. The object I’ve chosen to research is the Chauchat. It is with profound sadness that the New Mexico Military Museum mourns the passing of retired Brigadier General Jack Fox, President of the New Mexico Military Museum Foundation.

His commitment to preserving New Mexico’s military heritage was an enduring part of his lifetime of service. He believed deeply that the stories of New Mexico’s Soldiers, Airmen, and Veterans deserved to be preserved, not only to honor those who served, but to educate and inspire future generations. He understood that history is one of our greatest responsibilities, and he devoted himself to ensuring that the legacy of the New Mexico National Guard would never be forgotten.

As President of the Museum Foundation, General Fox was far more than a leader. He was one of the museum’s most dedicated advocates and an invaluable partner. He championed our mission, strengthened relationships throughout New Mexico’s military community, and was instrumental in helping shape the museum into the institution it is today.

For me personally, General Fox was a mentor and his perspective, encouragement, and willingness to share his institutional knowledge helped guide many of the decisions we have made in recent years. He celebrated our successes, challenged us to think about the future, and never lost sight of why this museum exists, to honor the service and sacrifice of New Mexico’s military men and women.

Jack’s legacy lives on in the museum he helped strengthen, in the history we work so diligently to preserve, and in all those who had the privilege of learning from him. We will continue the work he cared for so deeply, carrying forward his vision with the same commitment to preserving and sharing New Mexico’s military history.

We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Marvine, his family, friends, and all who mourn his passing. We are profoundly grateful for his leadership and his unwavering belief in this museum and its mission. His legacy will remain an enduring part of the New Mexico Military Museum for generations to come.

This Fourth of July, we proudly celebrate our nation’s enduring legacy and honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have defended our freedoms throughout the past 250 years.

From all of us at the New Mexico Military Museum, thank you to our veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. As we look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary, we invite you to join us in remembering the courage, commitment, and history that continue to shape our nation.

Today, we honor the courage, dedication, and service of the women who have shaped our nation’s military history. We especially recognize the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), whose commitment and leadership opened doors for generations of women in service.

We are working our way through our photographic holdings and we would like to feature Dorothy Abbot.

She joined the US Army in February 1945 and was stationed at various Army bases in Georgia and Tennessee where she trained and worked as a surgical technician. After World War II ended, she was transferred to Panama where she met and married her late husband, Allan Abbott in 1950. They were transferred to Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and built their home in Tijeras, New Mexico. Dorothy left the Army in 1954 and worked at Sandia Laboratories. She also was very active and volunteered countless hours to the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).

Today we take time to offer gratitude, remembrance, and honor to the brave servicemen and women who served their country with dignity, honor, and pride, and gave their lives for our freedom.
Their courage lives on through the families who continue to carry their legacy with strength and pride. Today and always, we remember and honor their sacrifice.

The New Mexico Military Museum is pleased to announce multiple internship openings for Summer 2026. These internships offer hands-on experience in museum operations, collections care, exhibition installation, archival research, public engagement, and oral history documentation. Interns will gain practical experience working alongside museum professionals while contributing to the preservation and interpretation of New Mexico’s military history. Our Exhibition, The Last of the 200th: Valdemar DeHerrera, Located in the breezeway outside the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, 407 Galisteo. The exhibition honors the life and legacy of Valdemar DeHerrera, New Mexico’s last living Bataan veteran. A reception and lecture will follow the Bataan Commemoration Ceremony at noon at the New Mexico Military Museum.
DeHerrera, who died July 15, 2025, at age 105, was deeply rooted in his community and devoted to his family. His story reflects not only one man’s wartime experience, but also the endurance, sacrifice and strength of an entire generation.
