Santa Fe Police and Santa Fe Sheriff's Office Arrest Suspect Following Shooting Incident

Santa Fe, NM – May 31, 2026, The Santa Fe Police Department and Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office arrested Jerome Jeremy Gurule, 19 of Santa Fe, after he shot a firearm at a female victim. He was taken into custody without incident at approximately 8:15 a.m. this morning following a shelter in place order for the Casa Rufina Apartments issued by SFPD at 4:43 a.m.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning SFPD responded to a report that Mr. Gurule was fighting with two females and then discharged a firearm in the 1400 block of Zepol Road. Police Officers from Patrol Team C responded to the scene and learned Mr. Gurule had been arguing with his girlfriend and when the female victim intervened to separate them, Mr. Gurule pointed and fired the gun at the female victim. Officers observed signs of a physical struggle on scene, and they also recovered an expended shell casing at the scene. Fortunately, the female victim that Mr. Gurule shot at was not struck by gunfire.

Officers conducting the investigation learned information that Mr. Gurule was possibly at his grandparent's residence at the Casa Rufina Apartments, located at 2323 Casa Rufina Road. Due to the apartment complex being located outside the jurisdiction of the Santa Fe Police Department, the Santa Fe Count Sheriff's Office was requested to assist SFPD with locating Mr. Gurule.

When an officer and deputy arrived at the apartment complex, they located Mr. Gurule's vehicle and had visual contact with him. They also saw him enter his grandparent's apartment.

A perimeter was established at the location and a localized reverse 911 notification to the residents at the Casa Rufina Apartments was issued, ordering them to shelter in place and remain indoors due to the nature of the offense committed by Mr. Gurule and the potential that he remained armed with a firearm.

The Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Drone Team was activated to assist with maintaining the perimeter and providing real time intelligence to the Incident Commander on scene.

Law enforcement conducted announcements over a public address system ordering Mr. Gurule to exit the apartment and submit to arrest. He did not comply. When his grandparents exited the apartment and contacted law enforcement, Mr. Gurule was observed on the roof of the apartment by law enforcement on the perimeter. He was instructed to come down from the building, but he returned to the apartment and barricaded.

SFSO activated their Special Weapons and Tactics Team, and they requested the assistance of SFPD's Special Operations, which includes the Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Crisis Negotiations Team, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and K9 Unit. SFPD activated Special Operations who also responded to the scene.

SWAT entered the apartment and made contact with Mr. Gurule inside a room, they instructed him to exit the room and to submit to arrest. He exited the room at approximately 8:15 a.m. and was taken into custody.

Mr. Gurule was arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer.

The Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to process for evidence.

The shelter in place was lifted at approximately 8:34 a.m.

Case number 2026005101.

We appreciate the patience from our community as we worked to resolve this situation. We also appreciate the assistance of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office with locating and apprehending Mr. Gurule.

All arrested persons are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
