This week we celebrated the completion of Phase 3 of the Southern New Mexico Berm Project in Columbus.

Flooding creates environmental and health hazards on both sides of the border. As the first of three phases to reach completion, this critical flood control and border infrastructure project will strengthen public safety, protect homes and businesses, and support long-term economic development along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Did you know New Mexico is home to 9 certified business incubators? We’re spotlighting each one in a new series highlighting the places where ideas and businesses grow. Next up: the Santa Fe Business Incubator (SFBI).

SFBI supports early- and growth-stage entrepreneurs across a range of industries, with a strong emphasis on bioscience, technology, and high-growth small businesses. They serve both tenant companies and the broader Santa Fe business community, including first-time founders and scaling startups.

What sets SFBI apart is the depth and range of what it offers under one roof. Members have access to flexible incubation space, including private offices, coworking, and one of the only wet lab facilities available to startups in the region. Beyond the physical space, SFBI provides cohort-based training, mentorship, and technical assistance, along with connections to capital resources, funding opportunities, and strategic partnerships. Regular community-building events tie it all together, linking entrepreneurs to the broader Santa Fe and New Mexico ecosystem.

What does rural economic development look like? One example is Dixon Cooperative Market’s “Equip the Back” project.

A Healthy Food Financing Fund grant will equip the expanded 1,000-square-foot Dixon Cooperative Market with critical infrastructure, including a walk-in refrigerator/freezer, produce cooler, and food handling equipment.

These upgrades unlock reliable cold storage and stronger retail capacity —allowing the co-op to purchase more from New Mexico producers, lower costs through bulk purchasing, and expand access to fresh, affordable food in a rural, underserved community.
