NM PBS: New Mexico in Focus 5.22.26 – For decades, some workers at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) have been state employees — but only in name. Classified as "temporary," they were denied benefits like health insurance, paid time off and retirement, even though they work full-time schedules. After nearly two years fighting for their rights, Cailley Chella reports, the state labor board has ruled in the employees’ favor, putting them on the doorstep of a massive victory.

CWA Local 7076 is declaring: Workers Over Billionaires this May Day.

We commit to taking the afternoon off work (request annual leave now) to join the action in Albuquerque on May 1st 3pm-7pm.

We will be joining dozens of New Mexico labor unions and community organizations and marching through the streets of Albuquerque with thousands of our fellow workers.

This event builds on the massive May Day mobilizations last year, when more than 3,000 people took to the streets of Albuquerque and hundreds of thousands rallied in over 1,000 events nationwide. Organizers expect an even larger turnout this May Day as attacks on working people, immigrants, and public services escalate.

We urge the PELRB to do the right thing on May 5th and uphold the labor board director’s recommendation that the State recognize the union rights of the “permanently temporary” workers at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Check out our bio to see the timeline of what’s been going on.

The internet has been down at NM Department of Health and NM Health Care Authority offices at 5300 Homestead Rd NE, Albuquerque since 2:00 PM Thursday, April 9.

The State is again paying hundreds of people to sit around and NOT serve the people of New Mexico, because our current governor hates remote work.

We want to work, but has been blocking agencies from allowing people to work from anywhere but their office, including in emergency situations.

And, no, phone hotspots don't work for 90% of the work we do.

The “permanently temporary” workers at the NHCC need benefits and union rights now. The State of NM continues to purposefully delay and stall every chance they get. They can do the right thing NOW and recognize the union rights of these workers voluntarily.
