Santa Fe County deputies have recently responded to the Colibri neighborhood for multiple reports of motor vehicle burglaries and one motor vehicle theft.

We are asking that you remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Lock your vehicles and keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

IMPORTANT: If you have any Ring camera video or information that you feel may help our investigation to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for these crimes, please call our non-emergency line at 505-428-3720.

It is good for us all to keep in mind to:
ALWAYS
*Lock your vehicles and set your car alarm if you have one
*Remove valuables from site, put in the trunk or other safe place
*NEVER leave cash visible
*DON’T leave keys in your vehicle

On August 26, 2026, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office received information that a bear was attempting to break into a home in the Hondo area. It gave up and retreated prior to our arrival. Attempts to locate and capture the bear were made, however it has not been captured as of this morning.

Bear sightings and encounters have been more frequent this year as their natural food sources have been diminished by drought and heat. We strongly encourage you to be aware of your surroundings and to take active measures to make your home less enticing to bears and other wildlife:

Be Bear Smart. Bear-Proof Your Home

SECURE YOUR TRASH Place trash in a secure receptacle and store in a shed or garage
Don’t put trash out night before pickup
Wipe down trash bins with ammonia to help mask scents
Don’t use meat or sweet-smelling food scraps in your compost piles
Pick all ripened fruit from trees and ground
Remove bird feeders
Don’t leave your pets food or water bowls outside
Clean your barbecue grills (burn off grease and food residue)
Keep your doors, windows and vehicle doors closed and locked.

Never feed a bear or leave food out for wildlife

IF YOU ENCOUNTER A BEAR:
Do not approach
Stay Calm
Make yourself appear large, speak in a calm but loud voice
Back away slowly giving the bear an escape route.
Never corner a bear or come between a mother and her cubs
If attacked, fight back aggressively, using anything at your disposal, rocks, sticks, your hands and aim for more vulnerable areas; nose and eyes

Throughout the month of September 2026, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a campaign to promote seatbelt usage and actively issue citations for seatbelt violations as well as unsafe, distracted, and aggressive driving.

Buckle Up. Ensure everyone in your vehicle is properly and safely secured with a seat belt or a child safety seat.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Traffic Safety Division provides overtime grant funding to local law enforcement agencies for traffic safety enforcement, training, education, and equipment in high-risk areas statewide. This partnership strengthens efforts to enhance road safety and reduce impaired driving across New Mexico communities, creating safer roads for all.

Two individuals in this vehicle broke into, and stole items from a vehicle at the San Isidro Church
parking lot, 2148 San Isidro Crossing on July 18,2026.

After more than 30 years of dedicated service to Law Enforcement and the citizens of Santa Fe County, Undersheriff Ken Johnson received his final call with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

He began his career with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office in 1992 as a Deputy Cadet. Over the years, he served in nearly every division in the agency, including as a member of the SWAT Team and a Detective Lieutenant. He continued to advance through the ranks, serving as Deputy, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and ultimately Major, before retiring in 2015.

In 2019 Ken Johnson returned to the Sheriff’s Office as Sheriff Adan Mendoza’s Undersheriff. Since then, he has continued to serve with honor, pride, dignity and an unwavering commitment to the people of Santa Fe.

Throughout his career, his leadership, experience and dedication have left an enduring mark on the Sheriff’s Office.

Undersheriff Johnson, we offer our deepest appreciation of the more than three decades of service. Most of all, thank you for the impact you have had on all of us. Your legacy will continue to inspire the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office for many years to come.

As you begin this next chapter, we wish you and your family all the very best.
