AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) makes a powerful impact on our SMBSD campuses, including at El Camino Junior High, by empowering students with academic agency, college and career readiness routines, and high expectations.

Bringing families into this journey early on helps ensure our students thrive in and out of the classroom.

Our amazing AVID teachers, Ashley Sandoval, Laura Davila, and Crystal Gavarre, hosted a Welcome Back to School event at El Camino this week for our AVID families. Parents and guardians joined us on campus for snacks, conversation, and an overview of upcoming events and opportunities for the school year.

The event gave us a wonderful space to build relational capacity and strengthen partnerships with our families right from the start.

Starting the school year strong is a great way to keep up the momentum all year. πŸ’«

Here are some tips to implement at home from the Tunnell School Counseling and Wellness Team that can help students feel secure, connected and ready to learn.

🍎 Keep routines predictable (consistent bedtimes, mornings, homework schedules).

🍎 Ask specific questions about your child's day.

🍎 Praise effort and growth.

🍎 Give your child time to adjust to the new school routine.

🍎 Talk about friendships (Who your child played with, sat with, how they handled disagreements).

🍎 Reach out for support when something feel different with your child. Potential warning signs could be changes in behavior, sleep, friendship or feelings.
