🌈🚔 A little rainbow to brighten your day! 🌈

As the rain begins to clear, we were treated to a beautiful sight right over our office — a full rainbow, a double rainbow, with one of our patrol vehicles right at the end of it! 🌦️✨

After a rainy day, it’s a wonderful reminder to slow down, appreciate the little things, and enjoy the beauty around us. 💙

As you head out this evening, please continue to drive safely, watch for wet roadways, allow extra stopping distance, and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. 🚗💧

🌧️🚔 RAINY ROADS + ALCOHOL = A DANGEROUS COMBINATION

Earlier today, a driver on Black Road experienced firsthand how dangerous wet roadways can be. The vehicle slid off the roadway and the driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

⚠️ This is a reminder that your vehicle’s condition and your decisions behind the wheel matter!

🌧️ Slow down in the rain. Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping distances. Sudden braking, acceleration, or steering can cause you to lose control.

🛞 Check your tires! Bald or worn tires have reduced traction, especially on wet pavement, increasing the risk of sliding and hydroplaning. Make sure your tires have adequate tread and are properly maintained.

🍺 Never drive under the influence. Alcohol impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Rainy conditions make an already dangerous decision even more hazardous.

🚗 Drive for the conditions. Increase your following distance, avoid sudden maneuvers, and give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely.

A few simple decisions can make the difference between arriving safely and ending up off the roadway. Before you drive, check your tires. If you drink, don’t drive. And when it rains, slow down!

🌧️🚗 RAINY DAYS + NEW DRIVERS = A TIME FOR EXTRA CAUTION!

As we recognize National Teen Driver Safety Week, the changing weather is a great reminder that learning to drive safely goes far beyond earning a driver’s license.

For parents of teen drivers, preparing our young drivers for the road means helping them build confidence, good judgment, and safe driving habits in all kinds of conditions — especially when the rain arrives! 🌧️

🌧️ Rainy weather driving tips for teens:
🚘 Slow down! Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping distance.
↔️ Increase following distance to give yourself more time to react and stop.
💡 Turn on your headlights when visibility is reduced.
🛞 Check your tires and windshield wipers to make sure they’re ready for wet weather.
📵 Your eyes and attention belong on the road.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents, your role matters! Don’t stop teaching once your teen gets their license. Practice with them in the rain, talk through potential hazards, model safe driving habits, and remind them that it’s always better to arrive late than not at all.

New drivers don’t gain experience overnight. Every conversation, every supervised drive, and every good decision helps build safer drivers for life.

A traffic crash in the rain is causing traffic delays. Please slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain patient as emergency personnel respond.

🌧️ Rainy-day driving safety tips:
🚗 Slow down! Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping distance.
📏 Increase following distance to give yourself more time to react.
💡 Turn on your headlights so you can see and be seen.
🛞 Avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, and abrupt lane changes.
📵 Stay focused and avoid distractions.
🚨 Never rubberneck at a crash. Keep your eyes on the road and follow directions from emergency personnel.

Remember, arriving a few minutes late is better than not arriving at all. Your safety—and the safety of everyone sharing the road—depends on the choices you make behind the wheel.

💙❤️ The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reminds everyone in Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Orcutt, Cuyama, and Los Alamos that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility!

Whether you’re walking to school, crossing the street downtown, enjoying your neighborhood, or walking along a rural roadway, a few simple safety habits can help prevent crashes and save lives.

🚶 PEDESTRIANS:
✅ Use marked crosswalks and intersections whenever possible.
✅ Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
✅ Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway.
✅ Put your phone away and stay alert.
✅ Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking in low-light conditions.

🚗 DRIVERS:
✅ Slow down near schools, parks, neighborhoods, and crosswalks.
✅ Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
✅ Always check for pedestrians before turning.
✅ Never drive distracted or impaired.

When you see flashing lights on the side of the road, remember: Move Over. Slow Down. Save Lives. 💙❤️

Here in Santa Maria and throughout the Central Coast, emergency responders and roadside service workers put themselves at risk every day while helping others along our roadways. A routine traffic stop, disabled vehicle, or roadside repair can quickly become dangerous when passing motorists fail to move over.

🚨 Who should you move over for?

The next time you approach a stopped vehicle with flashing or warning lights, look out for:

🚔 California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement vehicles
🚒 Fire engines, fire trucks, and wildland fire vehicles
🚑 Ambulances and paramedic units
🚨 Tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles
🚧 Caltrans and other highway maintenance vehicles
🛣️ Road construction crews and highway service vehicles
🚦 Traffic control and incident response vehicles
🔧 Roadside repair and service vehicles
🚍 Disabled or stopped public transit and other authorized service vehicles when covered by applicable law

California law requires drivers to move over and slow down for certain stopped vehicles displaying qualifying warning lights.

Move into an available lane if you can do so safely. If you cannot safely change lanes, slow to a reasonable and safe speed while passing.

✅ Stay alert and watch the road ahead.
✅ Check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
✅ Never make a sudden or unsafe lane change.
✅ Slow down and give roadside workers plenty of space.
✅ Put your phone away and keep your attention on driving.

⚠️ Remember: Flashing lights mean someone may be working just feet away from moving traffic. Give them room to do their jobs and return home safely to their families.

🚔 YOUR LICENSE PLATE MUST BE CLEAR AND LEGIBLE! 🚔

Did you know that altering your California license plate to prevent it from being read by law enforcement or electronic license plate readers can violate California Vehicle Code § 5201.1(c)? ⚖️

As shown in this example, a license plate with a damaged or altered reflective surface can make it difficult to clearly identify the plate number.

📘 What does the law say?

California Vehicle Code § 5201.1(c) prohibits erasing, painting over, or altering a license plate’s reflective coating to avoid visual or electronic capture of the plate or its characters.

⚠️ Why does this matter?
🔹 License plates help law enforcement identify vehicles involved in crimes, crashes, and other traffic incidents.
🔹 Obscured, altered, or unreadable plates can make identifying a vehicle more difficult when it matters most.

✅ Safety tips for drivers:
✔️ Keep your license plates clean and clearly visible.
✔️ Never paint over, modify, or alter your plate.
✔️ Check your plate periodically for excessive wear, peeling, or damage.
✔️ Replace a damaged plate through the DMV when necessary.

🚨 CRASH REMINDER: STAY IN CONTROL OF YOUR VEHICLE 🚨

Today, a vehicle crashed into a guardrail on the frontage road leading to the northbound US-101 on-ramp in Los Alamos. The impact caused the guardrail to pe*****te the vehicle. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.

The driver reported swerving to avoid an animal that crossed the roadway.

🐾 Unexpected hazards can happen in an instant. Whether it’s an animal, debris, or another sudden obstacle, how you react matters.

🚗 Safety reminders:
✅ Stay alert and scan the roadway ahead.
✅ Maintain a safe speed for the road and conditions.
✅ If an unexpected hazard appears, remain calm and maintain control of your vehicle.
✅ Avoid sudden, aggressive steering that could cause you to lose control.

Yesterday, we gathered to lay CHP Officer Brian Liles to rest, honoring his service, sacrifice, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and served alongside him.

Our hearts remain with his family, friends, and CHP family during this difficult time. His service will never be forgotten, and his legacy will live on.

Rest in peace, Officer Liles. We have the watch from here. 💙
