The primary factors for crashes in Santa Monica are people driving at unsafe speeds, failing to yield, and driving under the influence. Be the responsible driver: stick to the 25 mile per hour speed limit on local streets, watch out for pedestrians, and don't drink and drive.

Citing an increase in the number of cyclists and pedestrian activities since the arrival of the E Line in 2016, the City of Santa Monica is adding a protected bikeway and other safety infrastructure projects to the streets surrounding Metro's 17th St / SMC Station.

We’ve seen walking and bicycling activity go way up during COVID-19. While you’re out getting some exercise remember to be courteous and safe on the beach bike path.

Be Alert - whether you’re crossing the path as a pedestrian or bicycling along it be alert to traffic and activity by other modes

Maintain a Safe Speed – slow down when passing or when approaching intersections to avoid endangering others using the path

No Motorized Vehicles - e-bikes and scooters are not allowed on the beach path at any time

In early April, the Mobility Division upgraded the section of Broadway from 16th to 20th St to a protected bike lane as part of the City’s goal of building a protected network to increase the number of people who use bicycles for everyday transportation. The new design uses parked cars to separate bike and auto traffic enhancing safety and comfort for riders of all ages and abilities. This evening Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the next step in public health protections: “safer at home”. City of Los Angeles and joined, along with our four Westside city neighbors

What does “safer at home” mean? It means, stay at home as much as possible.

You can still make outings for essential things like:

- Going to the grocery store

- Going to the pharmacy to pick up medications and other healthcare necessities

- Taking a walk, riding your bike, and being in nature for exercise -- just keep at least six feet between you and others in your community

- Walking your pets and taking them to the veterinarian if necessary

- Going to work if you provide essential functions such as healthcare, government, food service, utility services, and public infrastructure

If you do need to head out, please remember to keep six feet apart from other individuals and wash your hands.
